Hebe thus appears to be the parent body of both the H chondrites and the IIE nonmagmatic Fe meteorites. With this discovery, probable asteroidal parent bodies have now been identified for more than a third of the terrestrial Meteorite flux, including the basaltic achondrites (6.2% [8], Vesta [9]); the enstatite achondrites (1.1%, 3103 Eger and the Hungaria Family [10]); and now the H chondrites (32.1%) and IIE irons (0.1%). ![]() | The James M. DuPont Meteorite Collection - a typical S spectrum with a steep reddish slope and weakened silicate absorption features. The high albedo of Hebe, comparable to an H6 chondrite, indicates that space weathering as seen by Galileo on Ida/Dactyl and Gaspra [7] is not the cause of the S spectrum of Hebe. Instead, the Hebe spectrum is produced by the presence of abundant NiFe metal (~40% of surface area) spread over an H-type substrate. By analogy to the IIE nonmagmatic Fe meteorites, which have been linked to the H-chondrite parent body, this metal segregated into relatively thin but laterally extensive layers in melt sheets associated with large impacts onto the relatively metal-rich H-type target. Subsequent smaller impacts selectively removed the

While most S asteroids can be rigorously excluded as OC parent bodies on mineralogical criteria, the S(IV) subtype has silicate compositions within the OC range [3]. Unfortunately for a simple resolution of the OC parent body question, S(IV) spectra still exhibit weaker silicate features and redder spectral slopes than OC assemblages. The S(IV) asteroid 6 Hebe is located in the inner asteroid belt near the chaotic zones associated with both the 3:1 proper motion resonance and the nu(sub)6 secular resonance. Moderate ejection velocities can deliver relatively large amounts of Hebe

DuPont Meteorite Collection - between the smaller (%3C10 km) NEAs and the larger (%3E10 km) observed main-belt objects include particle size, compositional and/or space weathering variations. The continuum of NEA spectra between S-types and ordinary chondrites is circumstantial evidence that a link exists between the S-asteroids and ordinary chondrites. However, further mineralogical analysis of the NEAs requires near-infrared data. Acknowledgments: Data reported in this abstract were obtained at the Michigan-Dartmouth-MIT Observatory. ![]() | The James M. DuPont Meteorite Collection - NEAs that have had previously published reflectance spectra. Comparisons of the NEA spectra to main-belt asteroid [1] and Meteorite [3] spectra shows some interesting trends among the NEAs. Seven NEAs have spectra very similar to ordinary chondrites and asteroid 1862 Apollo [4] (previously recognized ordinary-chondrite analog [5]). Twenty-nine other NEAs have spectral properties that span the gulf between the spectra of an average S-type and ordinary chondrites. (S-asteroids tend to have redder spectral slopes longward of ~0.6 micrometers and shallower 1 micrometer absorption bands.) Relative to main-belt asteroids, NEAs appear spectrally "closer" to ordinary chondrites in the visible-wavelength region. Possible reasons for this difference
