Listening Post - Coverage of DR Congo - Nov 21 - Part1

This episode of The Listening Post looks at the asymmetrical media coverage of the conflict in the Demoratic Republic of the Congo. In the News Divide, we turn our attention to a subject that has been eclipsed in recent weeks and months by the US presidential election and the global banking meltdown: the conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Despite being branded as 'Africa's world war,' a 'humanitarian catastrophe' and the human exodus of refugees that it has precipitated, the headlines in the Western media have been slow to emerge. We look at the disproportionate amount of airtime that General Laurent Nkunda and his band of rebels are enjoying thanks to their comparatively sophisticated public relations machine and how the media are largely buying into their narrative.

Inside Story - Crisis in DR Congo - Nov 2 2008 part 1

The UN is to send a convoy of food and medical supplies to help the 250,000 people displaced by recent fighting in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Thousands of people have been displaced in eastern DR Congo amid fighting between government forces and fighters from the rebel National Congress for the Defence of the People (CNDP). The CNDP is led by Laurent Nkunda, a renegade general who says he is fighting to protect the region's ethnic Tutsis. The latest outbreak of violence is threatening to escalate an already disastrous humanitarian situation. Inside Story asks why this crisis has erupted now and how much of it is fuelled by ethnic tensions and the battle to control the country's natural resources.

UNICEF: In DR Congo, rape as a weapon of war

GOMA, Democratic Republic of the Congo, 24 June 2008 -- In a momentous step forward for the protection of women and girls in DRC and around the world, the UN Security Council has voted unanimously in favour of a resolution classifying rape as a weapon of war. Resolution 1820, which passed last week, reiterates the status of sexual violence as a war crime, a crime against humanity, a form of torture and a constituent act of genocide. It also advances efforts to sanction perpetrators and raise the political, military and economic cost of such violence. "Sexual violence in DRC is on a scale and brutality unparalleled elsewhere in the world," says Child Protection Specialist Pernille Ironside in UNICEF's eastern DRC regional office. "While rape certainly existed prior to the war, the brutal nature of the violations that we see is appalling -- with over 1,000 women and girls raped per month. "This is truly a context in which sexual violence has taken on a new dimension," she adds. To read the full story, visit: http://www.unicef.org/infobycountry/drcongo_44598.html

UNICEF: Helping former child soldiers in DR Congo

Simon, 15, always loved to garden on his family's farm in the Masisi territory of eastern DR Congo. At age 10, however, he was forcibly abducted by the Rassemblement Congolais pour la Démocratie (RCD) militia, and for several years he fought on the front lines in many battles and was forced to loot villages in order to survive. After several unsuccessful attempts to escape, Simon (not his real name) managed to find refuge at the UNICEF-supported Centre de Transit et Orientation (CTO), a reintegration centre for children associated with armed forces. Child recruitment is a major concern for humanitarian groups in DR Congo. In recent years UNICEF has played a key role in working to abolish the practice and focus resources on the young victims, in keeping with the 'Paris Principles' adopted by more than 60 countries this year.
