Based on Jane Rule's novel "Desert of the Heart," the movie tells the story of Vivian Bell (Helen Shaver), a repressed English professor who goes to Reno for a quickie divorce in 1959. She spends the weeks waiting for her final divorce papers at a dude ranch where she meets Cay Rivvers (Patricia Charbonneau), a beautiful young casino worker.
Cay is a free spirit - an artist by day and casino worker by night, as well as a lesbian. Her surrogate mother Frances (Audra Lindley in an amazing departure from her comic role in "Three's Company") disapproves of her lifestyle, while also craving Cay's affection and attention.
To everyone's surprise, Vivian and Cay hit it off immediately as Cay introduces the shy academic to the wild-west casino scene as well as the breathless beauty of the desert. It's not long before Vivian finds her friendship moving into unexpected passion. And for Cay, it's the first time she has met someone who stirs her deepest emotions.
An original 35mm print of this film has been donated to the Outfest Legacy Project for LGBT Film Preservation at the UCLA Film & Television Archive. "The Sacrilegious Scorn" is mainly a paraphrase on Christianity's core-symbolism and motives.
Such examples are the Roman soldiers gambling over Christ's garment, the mockery of St. Michael the Archangel, driving Satan out of Heaven by stepping on him and pointing his sword onto him. Now we see this reversed, when the inaugurated Antichrist is doing that to St. Michael.
I prefer the term Dark Emperor - not Antichrist, for the battle of "light" and "shadow" reaches back far beyond Christianity.
We also witness the inauguration of the Dark Emperor in the Temple of the Baphomet, seeing him taking the oath as the new sovereign while celebrating a mockery of the Last Supper. The story culminates in the Dark Emperor showing up in front of his followers, bringing out blessings. The Empire of Darkness is then established.
The overall look of the video is a bow to the legendary, unique style of Roger Corman, especially his adaptation of The Masque of The Red Death, featuring the unforgettable Vincent Price. www.hammerfilms.com
