Amy Coen's Video Blog from Ethiopia

On a recent trip to Ethiopia, Amy Coen, President/CEO of Population Action International, had the opportunity to meet Dr. Bogaletch Gebra - affectionately called "Boge" - who is spearheading a national campaign to end the practice of female genital mutilation (FGM). They participated in a rally of over 15,000 girls, mothers, fathers and village elders who demonstrated their commitment to ending FGM in their communities. It takes a commitment from every level of a society to triumph over a traditional practice that has been performed for centuries in some communities and rallies like this one bring the world even closer to ending to this form of human rights abuse. To support Population Action International's mission of improving individual well-being and increasing global resources for population, family planning and reproductive health policies and programs, please visit us at www.populationaction.org/donateonline To learn more about Population Action International, please visit www.populationaction.org

Oscar Award Winner - Marion Cotillard 'La Vie En Rose'

Coens, Bardem, Cotillard Win Oscars By DAVID GERMAIN -- 21 hours ago LOS ANGELES (AP) ? "No Country for Old Men" was living up to its front-runner status at Sunday's Academy Awards, winning adapted screenplay for the Coen brothers and supporting actor for Javier Bardem. "La Vie En Rose" star Marion Cotillard was a surprise winner in the best actress category. Cotillard rode the spirit of Edith Piaf to Oscar triumph over Julie Christie, who had been expected to win for "Away From Her." Joel and Ethan Coen are mainly known for their original screenplays, making only two films based on adaptations, "No Country" from Pulitzer winner Cormac McCarthy's novel, and "O Brother, Where Art Thou?," loosely inspired by the ancient Greek epic "The Odyssey." "I think whatever success we've had in this area has been entirely attributable to how selective we are. We've only adapted Homer and Cormac McCarthy," said Joel Coen. Previous original-screenplay winners for 1996's "Fargo," the Coens came in as the best-picture and directing favorites for "No Country." The Coens missed out on a chance to make Oscar history ? four wins for a single film ? when they lost the editing prize, for which they were nominated under the pseudonym Roderick Jaynes. "The Bourne Ultimatum" won the editing Oscar and swept all three categories in which it was nominated, including sound editing and sound mixing. Cotillard tearfully thanked her director, Olivier Dahan. "Maestro Olivier, you rocked my life. You have truly rocked my life," said Cotillard, a French beauty who is a dynamo as Piaf, playing the warbling chanteuse through three decades, from raw late teens as a singer rising from the gutter through international stardom and her final days in her frail 40s. "Thank you life, thank you love. And it is true that there are some angels in this city." A relatively fresh face in Hollywood, Cotillard has U.S. credits that include "Big Fish," "A Good Year" and the upcoming "Public Enemies," featuring Johnny Depp and Christian Bale. With a heartbreaking turn as a woman succumbing to Alzheimer's in "Away From Her," Christie had been expected to win her second Oscar. She won best actress 42 years ago for "Darling." Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role Marion Cotillard Marion Cotillard La Vie en Rose NOMINATED ROLE Marion Cotillard plays Edith Piaf, the legendary French singer who rose to international fame from her beginnings on the streets of Paris. ACADEMY AWARDS HISTORY This is the first Academy Award nomination for Marion Cotillard. FILM SYNOPSIS In a life marked by personal tragedy and artistic triumph, Edith Piaf grows from a child born in poverty to an internationally acclaimed singer. Raised primarily by her grandmother, a brothel keeper, young Edith is discovered singing on the streets of Paris and begins a remarkable career that cannot save her from a life haunted by drugs, alcohol, and a succession of unhappy love affairs.

Burn After Reading

There's plenty of fire in Burn After Reading, the Coen brothers' playful and pungent tale set amid the bungling bureaucrats of the CIA and an assortment of other ditzy denizens of Washington, D.C. Focus Features John Malkovich portrays a CIA analyst with a drinking problem in the Coen brothers' latest film, "Burn After Reading." In the Coens' coterie of accomplishments, Burn After Reading is less like last year's scary, Oscar-winning No Country for Old Men and more like the giddily humorous Fargo. There is, though, a shocking moment of violence in Burn After Reading. The film has a clique of dysfunctional, insecure, crazed characters dealing with paranoia, infidelity and spy vs. spy antics. George Clooney and Brad Pitt, in particular, oceans apart from their Ocean's 11, 12 and 13 indulgences, craft moments that are not only funny but touching. Then there's Frances McDormand, the fine actress who's married to co-writer, co-producer, co-director (with his brother, Ethan) Joel Coen, who guided her to an Oscar for Fargo. An employee of the Hardbodies Fitness Center in Georgetown, an incessant online dater, desperate for plastic surgery, she creates a heartbreaking portrait of a miserably lonely woman who can't grasp a meaningful relationship. Consistently histrionic John Malkovich, meanwhile, plays a CIA analyst, demoted because of an apparent drinking problem. His explosions of rancor at agency honchos blasts from the screen: You're a Mormon, he scowls at one lightweight. Next to you, we all have a drinking problem! Then, he bellows, This is a crucifixion! arms spread, Jesus-like. Malkovich's performance is laced with detonations of a certain four-letter word. He's wild, angry and unforgettable. His most touching vignette is at home, during the day, unemployed, drinking, gazing at the tube, a vintage episode of Family Feud. Tilda Swinton, the Oscar winner for Michael Clayton, portrays Malkovich's wife, a self-absorbed pediatrician who's cheating on him with Clooney (her Michael Clayton co-star), a bumbling federal marshal. Swinton, so icy, so demeaning, and scruffily-bearded Clooney, so paranoid, so taken with himself (Maybe I can get in a run, he says after every sexual encounter), together again is sweet. Clooney is pushing an admirable career that includes The Good German, Good Night, and Good Luck and an Oscar in 2005 for Syriana. Obsessed with flooring (don't ask), suffering from lactose reflux (don't ask), he's a memorable doofus in Burn After Reading. The frosted-haired Pitt is delightful, too, as a dim-bulb trainer at Hardbodies who gets in over his head after finding a disc of Malkovich's memoirs. He's demonstrated serious acting chops in Babel and The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. In Burn After Reading, his comedic talents are impressive. With iPod earphones attached, he bops to the music. One of these days, Pitt deserves an all-out, singular comedy role. Richard Jenkins, the skillful actor from The Visitor and TV's Six Feet Under, is the fitness center manager who pines for McDormand though she's too busy online meeting men. With merely a glance, he creates a note of sadness, as he did in The Visitor. Burn After Reading is a roundelay of suspicion, of who's following whom. The cast has rapport or, as thick-headed Pitt pronounces it, rap-port. There are numerous small pleasures: Clooney warbling My Eyes Adored You in the shower, Pitt and McDormand plotting at a Jamba Juice, Malkovich in a drunken reunion with his Princeton alumni pals, Swinton nastily threatening a kid in her office to open his mouth. Small pleasures that add up to a large, 95-minute one.

No Country for Old Men - Strangulation Scene

NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN (2007) Tommy Lee Jones Javier Bardem Josh Brolin Directed by the Coen Brothers Based on the book by Cormac McCarthy I remember when I was watching the making-of documentary and the Coens were talking about how they wanted to create the most violent strangulation scene in film history. Whether or not they succeeded, I don't know, but what a hell of a way to start a movie! This scene is more than a strangulation of some unlucky cop; it is the prime theme of the film. It also shows us how incredibly sociopathically psychotic and evil Anton Chigurh is. Also, I love the shot of the cop;'s feet against the linoleum with the shoe skids. That is another moment in this film where death is made artistic. TRIVIA!: The actor playing the cop here is wearing a full chest cuirass with an attached false throat. This was to let Javier Bardem put some real strength and intensity into the strangling without injuring the actor.

No Country for Old Men - Gas Station Scene

NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN (2007) Tommy Lee Jones Javier Bardem Josh Brolin Directed by the Coen Brothers Based on the book by Cormac McCarthy I was just on IMDB reading comments about this movie. Once again, IMDB has reminded me how unbeliavebly fucking stupid many moviegoers are. No Country is a film that takes a very basic storyline to a whole other dimension. Kudos of course goes to McCarthy, whose books are incredibly subtle and brilliant, but unfortunately, many people can't seem to get that sublety, and see beyond the basic storyline. I also have to say that the Coens photographed this film immaculatey. There are some scenes that paused are like paintings. Very beautiful. Anyway, I personally believe that this scene is a recent classic, absolutely brilliant from start to finish. I remember watching this in theatres and thinking, "damn, some really bad things are going to happen". The tension is incredible. Oh, and I think Anton Chigurh (Javier Bardem) is one the greatest villains I have ever seen in a movie hands down.
