David Dharrapuy is a 37 year old yirdaki player. He was born at Milingimbi and currently resides in Ramingining's outstation Nangalala, his mother's land. He is Ramingining community's main ceremonial yirdaki player. He plays yirdaki for the Gupapuyngu, Djambarrpuyngu, Liyagalawumirr, Mildjingi, Ganalbingu, Murrungun, Marrangu, and Manharrngu clans. When families visit from other communities (Yirrkala, Galiwin'ku, Milingimbi, Gapuwiyak, etc.) for ceremony, Dharrapuy is often called upon to play yirdaki for them if they do not have their own yirdaki player. His father was Johnny Bonguwuy (deceased), a respected Gupapuyngu artist and ceremonial singer (he was field recorded by Alice Moyle at Milingimbi in the 1960s). Dharrapuy's mother Belinda Milngurr is from the Manharrngu clan, whose father was Burritjnga (deceased), a brother of famed 'Dollar Note' artist David Malangi. Dharrapuy's ma:ri is Balmbi, waku is Gamalangga, yapa is Gamal. He started learning yirdaki at around 10 years of age on a plastic pipe. The finer points of yirdaki playing were passed on by Peter Walarri, who himself learnt from his father George Darringguwuy. He learnt yirdaki first before becoming a manikaymirri (ceremonial singer), and is now also a recognised dalkarramirri (ritual specialist) having been given the role by ceremonial leader Joe Djembangu and brother Tommy Yumunungbi. The name 'Dharrapuy' comes from the word 'Dharra' which is the bark of the stringybark tree. Although the tree is Dhuwa moiety, its bark 'Dharra' or 'Barrwarn' is Yirritja. Formed in early -90 under the name Desecrator, this now sadly defunct band released 2 demos, an ep and 2 albums. In the fall of -92 they recorded their "The Book of Truth" debut album in the, at the time, rather unknown Studio Fredman.
