They have their All Ireland medals secured for 2008 and two of the country's top GAA players now have further trophies to adorn their mantlepiece.
Three of the outstanding performers in the closing stages of Championship '08 in both hurling and football have been honoured as the hurling and football GAA Player of the
Month, sponsored by Vodafone for August and September at Dublin's
Westbury Hotel.
For Tyrone's Sean Cavanagh it capped a very special fortnight as he was
chosen football Player of the Month for both August and September, just
ten days after putting in a man-of-the-match performance for his county
in their All-Ireland victory over Kerry. Cavanagh was also shortlisted
on Monday for the overall football GAA Player of the Year award, also
sponsored by Vodafone.
Star Waterford full-forward Eoin Kelly and Kilkenny's All-Ireland
winning sharp shooter Eddie Brennan took the hurling Player of the Month
awards for August and September respectively. Brennan, like Cavanagh,
was also shortlisted on Monday for the Player of the Year award.
They were presented with their awards by GAA President Nickey Brennan
and Vodafone Consumer Director Carolan Lennon.
The inspirational Tyrone star received his back-to-back awards for
outstanding performances against Mayo, Dublin and Wexford in August in
which he scored a total of 1-10. The former midfielder finished the
season - his first as a full-forward - with the impressive overall tally
of 2-25.
Eoin Kelly may not have collected an All-Ireland medal this year but he
enjoyed arguably his best ever championship season, with his display in
Waterford's All-Ireland semi-final success against Tipperary one of the
true highlights. Kelly scored 1-10 in that game, and 7-43 in total, as
Waterford reached their first All-Ireland final since 1963.
Unfortunately for Kelly and his Waterford colleagues, they were met in
the final by a Kilkenny team that is now widely perceived to be one of
the greatest teams of all time. Player of the Month winner Eddie
Brennan is a vital cog in that Kilkenny machine and ended up the season
with a staggering 4-12 from play.
Presenting the awards, GAA President Nickey Brennan said: "The three
players we honour here today are at the pinnacle of their game and
provided us with some of the great individual performances of the
season.
"As a Kilkenny man I am delighted, of course, to be presenting the
hurling award for September to my county-man Eddie Brennan but I am
equally proud to be doing likewise for Eoin Kelly of Waterford for his
outstanding performances in August.
"The awards also round off what has been a fantastic past two months
for Sean Cavanagh and, likewise, he is thoroughly deserving of this
award.
On behalf of Vodafone, Carolan Lennon said: This is Vodafone's twelfth
year as proud sponsors of these very fine awards and we have been
privileged on each and every occasion over those years we have presented
the awards to get the opportunity to mingle with some of the greatest
heroes of Irish sport. Today is no different as we salute the
performances of Sean Cavanagh for his fantastic achievement in winning
back-to-back awards for the months of August and September in football
and for Eoin Kelly and Eddie Brennan for their hurling awards for August
and September respectively.
