It feels good to be on the other side. Recently, we got a chance to pilot a 2010 Chevrolet Camaro V6 Prototype out on the public highways and byways of southeastern Michigan.
Typically, we're on the other side of this game, pestering development engineers and posting spy shots of some car just like these engineering prototypes of the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro V6. Heck, as far as we know, we might have run pictures of one or both of these very automobiles.
Yes, these two bits of spy bait still had matte-black camouflage panels (one with triangles made of what looked like white shoe polish), ill-fitting bumper covers, no Chevy bowtie and a bunch of small makeshift headlight elements, all of which taken collectively look a little bit like a rash.

It was only a matter of time before the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro hit the Nürburgring test track. GM has been using the German road course to fine-tune nearly all of its performance cars as of late, so the appearance of the Camaro alongside the 2009 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 didn't surprise our spy shooters.
Unlike some of the earlier Camaro prototypes we've seen, this particular test mule has a set of Brembo brakes and a more aggressive wheel-and-tire package. The obvious conclusion? This is a Camaro Super Sport model. But not so fast, because when you consider that previous Camaro test mules have featured very tame-look brakes, this upgrade could indicate nothing more than the Chevrolet Camaro Z28.
Then consider the sound of this Camaro test mule. It's all motor, yet it doesn't have the same sonic signature as GM's supercharged LSA V8 that speculation indicates will be the centerpiece of the top-of-the-line Camaro SS. With 525 horsepower, the supercharged engine would give the SS a big advantage over both the Dodge Challenger SRT8 and the Ford Shelby GT500. But this prototype sounds like it probably has a normally aspirated V8, most likely a detuned LS3 V8 with somewhere around 400 hp.
Judging from the looks of this Camaro at speed, the suspension is already well dialed in. Roll, dive and squat are all pretty minimal for a car that's expected to have a curb weight in the range of 3,600-3,800 pounds. With the start of production for the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro still a year away, the engineers at Chevrolet still have plenty of time to fine-tune this car, so these Nürburgring tests are just the beginning. Behold: The 2010 Chevrolet Camaro in all its full-on production glory.
What? Well yes, it looks like that Camaro Concept we saw more than two and a half years ago at the 2006 Detroit Auto Show. And it looks exactly as you knew it would from two years of spy shots of the car under development. And it will look exactly like this when it goes on sale in March of next year. You expected what? That it would look like a Corsica or a Mark VIII?
Enthusiasts would no more forgive Chevrolet for watering down the stunning 2006 Camaro concept than they would forgive General Motors if it decided a year from now to cancel the Volt program. The concept, with its steely, all-business color, dark-tinted glass, pavement-skimming raked stance and fang-shaped side mirrors, looked like a 1969 Camaro designed by the Lockheed Skunk Works.
Of course, the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro production-specification cars pictured here ? V6 models with 20-inch wheels that come as part of the RS trim package ? don't get the slammed stance, chopped roof and black windows of the concept. Nor do they have the 22-inch rear and 21-inch front wheels of the concept.
The V8 model of the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro ? called the SS ? won't have that showcar ornamentation either. Chevy is holding back on revealing the SS for reasons that make sense only within the confines of GM's headquarters at the Renaissance Center in downtown Detroit, even though it looks very nearly identical to the V6 model with the RS package. (In case you were wondering, the SS will have the concept car's little mail-slot opening on the top of the front fascia. This particular aperture has no historical precedent in the world of Camaro and owes more to the Corvette Z06 or the Mini Cooper S.)

For anyone who follows cars, this is a day we've long been waiting for, with the official release of the production version of the 2010 Camaro. We've been seeing this car in one concept form or another for the last few years, but until today, we didn't know exactly how this machine was going to look, and thankfully for General Motors, the new 2010 Camaro is very faithful to the concepts. Overall, it looks like the 2010 Camaro is going offer something for everyone, so get ready to plunk down that deposit, the 2010 Camaro will be released in the first quarter of 2009.
