As a Canadian, making a tribute to Lucy Maud Montgomery's "Anne Of Green Gables", the miniseries and its spinoff, "Road To Avonlea" is a must. First published in 1908, "Anne Of Green Gables" is the classic story of a mischevious, redheaded orphan, Anne Shirley (Megan Follows), who desperately longs for a place to call home. When she is adopted by elderly siblings, the Cuthberts, stern Marilla (Colleen Dewhurst), and kindly Matthew (Richard Farnsworth) of Prince Edward Island, she is saddened to learn that they had sent for a boy. However, Marilla, despite her occasional exasperation with the child, decides to keep Anne and, with her imagination, spunky personality and irresistable charm, the girl soon wins over everyone she meets, and Marilla and Matthew discover the familial love their lives have been lacking. Anne's adventures in the town of Avonlea, alongside her "bosom friend" Diana Barry (Schulyer Grant, grand-niece of Katharine Hepburn), and her adversary turned love interest Gilbert Blythe (Jonathan Crombie), continues along into the sequel, where Anne, rejecting Gilbert's proposal, decides she needs a new challenge and takes on a teaching assignment at Kingsport. She meets a man who is her "ideal" but discovers that home is really where her heart is, and that Gilbert is the man who has it. (This was followed in 1999 by another sequel which was not based on Montgomery's works). In 1989, Kevin Sullivan, producer of the "Anne" films, decided to make a television series based on Montgomery's "The Story Girl" and "The Golden Road", transporting the setting back to Avonlea and reintroducing a few of the familiar characters, such as Marilla, town gossip Rachel Lynde (Patricia Hamilton) and Anne's beloved, "kindred spirit" teacher, Muriel Stacy (Marilyn Lightstone). Several actors who were in the original Anne miniseries also returned portraying different characters: Cedric Smith, Mag Ruffman, Jackie Burroughs and David Fox (as Alec King, Olivia King Dale, Hetty King and Clive Pettibone respectively). Sarah Polley was cast as "The Story Girl", Sara Stanley, who is sent from Montreal to live with her mother's relatives, the Kings, on Prince Edward Island, after her wealthy father is accused of embezzlement. Placed under Hetty and Olivia's care at Rose Cottage, Sara finds herself feeling out of place amongst the small town attitudes, Hetty's strict discipline and the taunting of her cousins, Felicity (Gema Zamprogna), Felix (Zachary Bennett) and Cecily (Harmony Cramp, later Molly Atkinson), although she is greeted with open arms by Olivia, Alec and his wife, Janet (Lally Cadeau). Like Anne before her, the imaginative Sara begins to warm the hearts of those around her, and when offered the chance to return to Montreal, she decides to remain in her mother's hometown. The series was a potpourri of innocent adventures, chaste romance, small town values, friendship and family love. During the second season, focus began to shift from Sara (although Polley remained top-billed until she departed from the show in the fifth season), and more on the rest of the King clan, particularly on the romance between Felicity and the mysterious Gus Pike (Michael Mahonen), a seafaring young man who was eventually welcomed into the community. Felix, too, came of age, working at the White Sands Hotel and courting Izzy Pettibone (Heather Brown), while Olivia married Jasper Dale (R.H. Thompson) once the town outcast but indeed a very intelligent and inventive man. Sara began to serve more or less as a matchmaker and messanger between family and friends, and later left Avonlea to study in Paris, returning for two more episodes including the finale, "So Dear To My Heart", which ended the series with Felicity and Gus's wedding, just before the outbreak of the first world war. Many of the episode ideas came from not only Montgomery's novels but also her short stories, found in "Chronciles Of Avonlea" and "Further Chronicles Of Avonlea". In 1998, a Christmas special, "Happy Christmas Miss King" was aired, with Hetty facing a life-threatening operation, Olivia debating on whether to return to Avonlea, and Felix declared missing in action (he had enlisted in the Navy in the final episode of the series), but several of the actors were unable to reprise their roles from the show. The series itself was acclaimed and award-winning, and featured an array of wonderful secondary characters as well as many famous guest stars, such as Dianne Wiest, Stockhard Channing, Christopher Lloyd, Bruce Greenwood, Meg Tilly, Christopher Reeve, Michael York and an up-and-coming Ryan Gosling. It also hinted at the changing of the times with Felicity deciding to become a doctor, which was definately a pioneering aspiration for women in those times.
