AeroTV Flies The D-Jet... In A Simulated Kinda Way

Diamond's aggressive new D-Jet program has been aimed primarily at the burgeoning owner-pilot market -- with the hopes that a simple and capable single-engine jet might be more palatable to the upgrading piston and light turbine pilot than the supposedly more complex Eclipse 500 and the Cessna Citation Mustang. With an altitude limit of 25,000 feet, it is Diamond's hope that the aircraft will prove to be safer if the pressurization goes tango-uniform -- and of course, being a single, they expect that in jet-terms, the D-Jet will be a bargain to operate. In November of 2006, Diamond announced that Airline Transport Professionals (ATP) placed the first serious fleet order for 20 D-Jets, with the aim that they will become a major provider of training to D-Jet owners next year. Just a few months ago, Diamond confirmed that the single-engine Williams powered hot-rod will be built near the main plant in London, Ontario -- no doubt encouraged by the Canadian government's investment of nearly 20 million dollars, as well as the additional grant of $11 million from Ontario. The plant investment, alone is expected to expend some $100 million, by the time the project reaches completion. In the meantime, D-Jets are flying up a storm. The first bird took wing on April 18, 2006, and was followed d by public flights at Oshkosh. Since then, a second bird has been added to the flight test program and a third is expected shortly. Certification is expected in the middle of 2009... delayed slightly by the switch to a more powerful variant of the Williams FJ33, called the FJ33-19. Of special note, is Diamond's early development of a very capable D-Jet flight simulator, built with pretty much the same font end as a real D-Jet. Though a separate division builds the Diamond Flight sims, the devices are already getting quite a solid rep for their realism, capabilities and utility. Come along as ANN's Editor-In-Chief, Jim Campbell, takes a (simulated) flight in the D-Jet and gets a feel for Diamond's hottest new set of wings! Aero-TV: Elon Musk Talks About The SpaceX Revolution

Leader In Commercial Space Business Talks About The Future After bearing the pouring rain that "blessed" the ground-breaking of a new launch facility headquartered in the shadow of historic Space Launch Complex 40, Aero-TV's Jim Campbell got some rare one-on-one time with SpaceX honcho, Elon Musk. The new facility, which will someday launch Falcon 9 rockets for Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (SpaceX) was dedicated early in November, during the World Space Expo. Space Launch Complex 40 (SLC-40) is situated on the historic Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, and will start serving as the primary launch site for SpaceX's upcoming Falcon 9 launch vehicle, beginning in late 2008. Located on the Florida coast, just south of NASA's launch site for all Apollo moon missions and Space Shuttle flights, SLC-40 is capable of supporting both the Falcon 9 and future Falcon 9 Heavy missions. In operation since 1965, SLC-40 has hosted numerous launches, including the departure of two interplanetary missions -- the Mars Observer satellite, and the Cassini spacecraft now exploring the rings and moons of the planet Saturn. "Initiating activities at the Cape in Florida is a major milestone in our mission to decrease the cost of reliable access to space," said Elon Musk, founder and CEO of SpaceX, at the ceremony. "This is truly the beginning of a new era in commercial space in Florida and we are thrilled to help bring SpaceX to Florida" commented Space Florida CEO Steve Kohler, who also participated in the ceremony. In the coming months, SpaceX will perform extensive upgrades and removal of outdated infrastructure to transform the site into a state of the art facility for commercial satellite launches, supply missions to the International Space Station (ISS), and eventually lofting crew carrying missions to the ISS and future orbiting destinations. Check out what Musk has to say about the future of SpaceX... including his thoughts about what he'll be doing ten year form now... all that and more in this episode of Aero-TV!!! Aero-TV Visits With Rod Machado For A Serious Talk ...

Rod Talks About In-Flight Emergencies One of the better reasons to attend the popular aviation events around the nation is the opportunity to enjoy the wit and wisdom of some of aviation's true experts... but no one plays as well to an aviation crowd as aviation humorist, flight instructor and safety advocate, Rod Machado. Rod is a professional speaker who travels across the United States and Europe delighting his listeners with upbeat and lively presentations. Machado truly loves mixing it up with the audience. His unusual talent for simplifying the difficult and adding humor to make the lessons stick has made him a popular lecturer both in and out of aviation. Rod’s presentations include topics as diverse as Risk Assessment, Defensive Flying and Handling In-flight Emergencies. His non-aviation topics include: Safety Awareness programs, Humor as a Communication Tool and The Lost Art of Thinking. Flying since 1970 and instructing since 1973, Rod has over 8,000 hours of flight time earned the hard way—one CFI hour at a time. Since 1977 he has taught hundreds of flight instructor revalidation clinics and safety seminars and he was named the 1991 Western Region Flight Instructor of the Year. Rod holds all fixed-wing (powered) flight instructor ratings as well as an airline transport pilot license. He also owns an A36 Bonanza. He is AOPA’s National CFI spokesman and a National Accident Prevention Counselor appointed by the FAA in Washington DC. But most of all, he is a passionate and positive spokesman for aviators everywhere and an excellent proponent for all things aviation. We caught up with Rod at the 2008 AOPA Fly-In, last June where he gave an extensive preparation dedicated to a stirring discussion on in-flight emergencies. The seminar notes opined that, "With a little caution, good judgment, and reasonable equipment, you can expect to fly safely for most of your piloting days. Once in a great while, you may run into a rare in-flight emergency. This is when knowing exactly what ...

Aero-TV Checks Out Avidyne's Latest: The IFD800 and PFD4000

Compact 8" PFD4000 Joins Massive 15" Systems From Avidyne -- With Synthetic Vision! It's been an interesting year for a renewed and reinvigorated Avidyne. Avidyne Corporation had a message for pilots, manufacturers, and the general aviation industry as a whole, at AirVenture 2008: the company's back, and anyone who had written them off should take notice. After ceding much of the GA glass panel market -- a market pretty much Avidyne created, with its Envision flight deck -- to rival Garmin, Avidyne knew it had to offer a knockout punch in order to stand any chance of regaining market share. The avionics manufacturer has done it by combining Synthetic Vision (SVS) and Enhanced Vision (EVS) with large-format 15-inch Integrated Flight Displays (IFDs). Avidyne says its Entegra SVS offers improvements over existing systems by depicting 3D terrain all the way out to the horizon, based on the aircraft's altitude above the ground. The Avidyne system also depicts obstacles, traffic and "Highway-in-the-Sky" (HITS) boxes on the PFD, enhancing the utility of the airplane, improving the comfort level of passengers, and increasing the safety of each flight. As demonstrated on Avidyne's massive new 15" IFD8000 PFDs, the company builds on that capability by offering Entegra EVS enhanced vision, using a Max-Viz EVS-100 infrared camera. EVS is designed to turn night into day, enabling pilots to see up to ten times further in marginal VFR conditions through most atmospheric obscurations. With SVS and EVS, pilots can now fly comfortably at night, enjoying clear views of the ground, seeing emergency landing fields, roads, lakes, and buildings. Avidyne also introduced the Entegra PFD4000, a new compact, 8-inch primary flight display system, at AirVenture 2008. The panel is designed to fit virtually any general aviation aircraft, adding the enhanced situational awareness and reliability of an all-glass flight deck. The PFD4000 is designed as a "6-pack" replacement that will fit in virtually any panel space and ...

Aero-TV Ponders Some VLJ Questions... And VLJ Answers

A Number of Eclipse Buyers Talk About Their Decisions Wow; what a difference a few weeks make... ANN's Aero-TV crews spent some time in Albuquerque a few weeks back, before Oshkosh and the startling events that occurred there -- and chatted up a number of Eclipse owners/buyers about their thoughts about the airplane, the industry, and the issues of the day. We present their discussion for your perusal, and look forward to getting back to some of these same people in the next year to see how their answers, concerns and aspirations have held up as Eclipse remakes itself -- post Raburn. We covered some interesting ground... from the recently announced Eclipse 400, to the price increase Eclipse instituted for the Eclipse 500 twin jet program so that the company could work its way to profitability. The Eclipse 400, in particular, was on the tip of everyone's tongue. After completing 10 months of extensive research on the ECJ, Eclipse claimed back in may that they were "confident this is the perfect aircraft for the emerging single-engine jet market. As many of you have experienced firsthand, this jet inspires people. It immediately captures their imaginations, and when they look a little closer and begin to grasp the level of performance and value it delivers ? they are truly blown away." Previous Eclipse customers were the first allowed to place deposits on the 1.35 million dollar Eclipse 400. Public deposits were accepted, for the first time, during at EAA AirVenture 2008. The Eclipse 400 will be powered by a Pratt & Whitney Canada PW615F engine. At an estimated 330 knots, it will use less than one pound of fuel per nautical mile ? making it the world?s most fuel-efficient jet aircraft. It seats four and cruises at 41,000 feet, nearly four miles above its closest competition. It will also feature the most sophisticated flight deck and complete aircraft integration available in general aviation. The Eclipse 400 is priced at $1.35 million in June 2008 economics, and at last report, Eclipse ...
