Organisers were yesterday hoping the weather in Spain would hold as the team practised. "There will be no time delay and no CGI [computer-generated imagery]. If it works, people will know who it's for. If it doesn't, they won't," said Ian Armstrong, Honda's manager of customer communications.
The stunt is a means of gaining publicity for Honda's new multi-million pound ad campaign, which features 45 skydivers promoting the Honda Accord by creating a series of shapes over the Mojave desert to reflect new features on the car. Our recent test of the 2009 Mazda 6 s Grand Touring showed us that Mazda can still offer sporting dynamics in its all-new family sedan, even while providing more room, more features and more power. We were concerned that the sporting spirit of the last-generation, fun-but-snug Mazda 6 might have been lost in the search for commercial success, but we came away believing this new car still has that zoom-zoom thing.
Like Mazda, we believe a family sedan can be lively as well as practical. So to gauge the way in which the 2009 Mazda 6 fits into the new world of family sedans, we figured a comparison is in order. A 2009 Mazda 6 s Grand Touring would be our starting point.
Then we enlisted the 2008 Nissan Altima 3.5 SE with its continuously variable automatic transmission. It's the car that most people consider to be the sportiest in this category, matched with a transmission that shatters all expectations about CVTs. (We know this car is available with a manual transmission, but we also know the CVT is a better choice. Trust us.)
The all-new 2008 Honda Accord is the standard of the category, the winner of our last comparison test of family sedans. A 2008 Honda Accord EX-L Navi matched up nicely. Hailed for its value, refinement and excellent quality, the well-mannered Accord would challenge the Mazda's practical abilities.
And so we began our family sedan comparison test, and we're wondering how far the Mazda 6's fun-o-meter has swung away from "I could use a Red Bull" toward "My adrenal gland is sore and I need to grow up." Well, Honda have trumped that sensation with ADAS, incredible new technology that effectively lets the car drive itself! A camera reads the lines on the road, and feeds torque to the steering wheel, taking off the pressure off the driver. NC produced a video news reel for Honda to promote this new technology and generate news coverage. VNRS are essentially raw footage sent to television programmes from which they cut together their own news story. The footage was also used by Honda to create this demonstration footage, which features on their website.

The 2 minute commercial, entitled "cog", uses over 85 individual parts of the new Accord which precisely and intricately "knock on to" and interact with one another to form a complex chain reaction which lasts until the new Accord is finally revealed.
Context
When Honda came to us, they were underperforming in the UK car market.
One of the most striking reasons for this under-performance was their recessive image. They were seen as dull but reliable. Good engineers, but uninspiring car makers. The car market is too cluttered and too complicated for people to consider many car brands. The more recessive ones fade from people's attention very quickly.
Philosophy/Solution
Our task was clear -- get Honda onto people's shortlists. This meant combating perceptions of Honda as a brand, not just extolling the virtues of the cars.
Honda's corporate culture and history are uniquely compelling. Mr. Honda himself was a fascinating, unexpected character. Not to tell these stories would have been a communications crime. So we told them in a series of brand and product ads that explain Honda's 'Power Of Dreams' philosophy
Results
Since we started working with Honda in 2002, their sales are up 55%. Consideration of Honda for next car is up from 12% in 2002 to 26% in 2006. Ad awareness is ahead of rivals VW and Toyota on a fraction of their spend. The campaign has delivered over £400m in incremental sales revenue and has helped Honda's website become most visited of any car manufacturer.
