Almost 100 years old, Lester Hayes was a pioneer of Abstract Photography. He took photographs of ordinary things, using a sheet of mylar plastic shimmering in the breeze, to produce stunning images, and he did it all with the brand new Kodak Instamatic. Kodak awarded his ingenuity with a major one man exhibition in New York City, but became disinchanted when Hayes discovered a tiny flaw in the camera that ultimately contributed to its demise. Detroit Electro / Techno outfit Drexciya was conceived in 1989, but first came into the public eye in 1994 with "Aquatic Invasion" - the first of a thematic series of releases. Drexciya's James Stinson and Gerald Donald remained hidden behind their alias for much of the group's existence, communicating a complex personal mythology of a "Drexciyan" race of underwater dwellers descended from pregnant slave women thrown overboard during trans-Atlantic deportation. Within this fiction, their music - which they claimed was recorded "live in the studio" rather than programmed - was imagined as a "dimensional jumphole" between their black African roots and the contemporary USA. Sadly Stinson died suddenly on 3rd September 2002 of a heart condition. Donald continues to produce music under other names. -Discogs. Drexciya were a mysterious electro unit from Detroit, Michigan. The late james stinson was the only officially identified member of Drexciya, but it was considered an open secret that he had a partner, gerald donald. The majority of Drexciyas releases were in the style of harsh, dancefloor oriented Electro, punctuated with elements of retro, 1980s detroit techno, with occasional excursions into the Ambient and Industrial genres. Drexciya combined a faceless, underground, anti-mainstream media stance with mythological, sci-fi narratives, to help heighten the dramatic effect of their music. In this respect they were similar to artists within and close to the Detroit collective Underground Resistance. Their name referred to a myth comparable to Platos myth of Atlantis, which the group revealed in the sleeve notes to their 1997 album The Quest. Drexciya was an underwater country populated by the unborn children of pregnant African women thrown off of slave ships that had adapted to breathe underwater in their mothers wombs. Reports of Drexciyas disbanding in 1997 were contradicted two years later when a new Drexciya track appeared on the Underground Resistance compilation Interstellar Fugitives, followed by three more Drexciya albums.
