 | Pulling the barrel off a bolt action rifle is nearly impossible without the right tools. In this GunTec video Larry Potterfield, CEO and Founder of MidwayUSA, explains how to properly remove the barrel from a bolt action rifle using a barrel vise and action wrench. He starts by bolting the barrel vise to a heavy bench and coating some oak block with Baker brand resin. He then clamps the barrel in the vise. Once the barrel is secured, a Wheeler Engineering action wrench is tightened to the receiver, using a brass shim to prevent marring of the front ring. A significant amount of force is then applied to the handle of the wrench until the receiver breaks free. The receiver can then be turned the rest of the way off by hand.  | Headspace is a critical component of firearm safety and is easy to measure when you have the right tools. Larry Potterfield, CEO and Founder of MidwayUSA, uses a Mauser 98 rifle in this GunTec presentation to demonstrate the process for checking headspace. He starts by taking the bolt out of the action and removing the extractor. Headspace is then checked using a Go and No Go gauge. He starts by inserting the go gauge into the chamber and gently closing the bolt. If the chamber has at least the minimum amount of headspace the bolt will completely close. Now he repeats the process using the No Go gauge. If the headspace is excessive then the bolt will close completely and the gun shouldn't be fired.  | When cycling a bolt action rifle eight different things happen. In this GunTec presentation Larry Potterfield, CEO and Founder of MidwayUSA, explains all eight things that occur when the action is cycled using a Mauser 98 rifle. First, as the bolt handle is lifted the bolt handle contacts the primary extraction cam located on the top of the rear bridge. This begins the extraction process. Second, the cocking piece moves to the rear cocking the action for the next shot. Third, as the bolt is rotated, the firing pin is blocked as a safety measure. Fourth, as the bolt travels to the rear, the ejector kicks out the empty case. As the bolt is pushed forward the next cartridge is stripped from the magazine and pushed into the chamber, this is number five. Sixth, closing the bolt causes the locking lugs to seat into the lug recesses in the receiver. Seventh, as the bolt is rotated the firing pin is unblocked so the next round can be fired. Last, the cocking piece is blocked by the sear, making the gun ready to be fired with the pull of a trigger.
