Nick Simper gehört wohl zu den Menschen, denen bei all ihren Aktivitäten das Pech an den Fingern klebt. Sein Rausschmiss bei Deep Purple, die Entscheidung, eine einmalige Abfindung von 10.000 Pfund lebenslänglichen Royalties aus den ersten drei Purple-LPs vorzuziehen...
Dieses Pech sollte auch Nicks folgende Band Warhorse begleiten, obwohl doch alles am Anfang so vielversprechend aussah...
Nicks erste Station nach Deep Purple war die Marsha Hunt Band. Regelmäßige Bezahlung, doch eher unregelmäßige Auftritte, weil Marsha diverse Filmpläne verfolgte. Freizeit, die Nick dazu nutzte, eine eigene Band auf die Beine zu stellen. Pläne mit bekannteren Musikern (Albert Lee, Mick Underwood) wurden bald fallengelassen und es kristallisierte sich eine Band mit Nick, Ged Peck (g), Mac Poole (dr), Ashley Holt (voc) und Rick Wakeman (keyb) heraus. Wakeman wurde wegen chronischer Unzuverlässigkeit bald wieder gefeuert und bei den ersten Demo-Aufnahmen 1970 ("Miss Jane") half Frank Wilson (keyb) aus, der danach festes Bandmitglied wurde. Als Bandname war zuerst Iron Horse angedacht, dann aber zu Warhorse geändert, da es schon eine Band mit dem Namen gab.
Ein Plattenvertrag mit Phonograms neuem Vertigo-Label war schnell geschlossen und die Debüt-LP "Warhorse" erschien im November 1970. Mich erinnert bei dieser LP musikalisch vieles an Deep Purple Mk I, allerdings mit einem großen Unterschied. Ashley Holt hat eine viel aggressivere Stimme als Evans.
Als Single wurde Anfang 1971 "St. Louis" ausgekoppelt (einzige Fremdkomposition auf dem Album und der Titel der Scheibe, der mir am wenigsten gefällt). Auf der folgenden Tour kam es zu Schwierigkeiten mit Ged Peck, der schließlich durch Peter Parks ersetzt wurde.Auch im Umfeld liefen allmählich einige Dinge aus dem Ruder. Ron Hire (das H in HEC Enterprises) fehlte als Manager die Erfahrung und die Beziehung zum Plattenlabel verschlechterte sich zunehmend, so dass Warhorse nach der Produktion der zweiten LP "Red Sea" dort gedroppt wurde.
Im April 72 verließ Poole die Band, um bei Gong einzustiegen. Sein Ersatz wurde Barney James. Nicht nur der Schlagzeuger wurde getauscht, sondern auch das Management. Doch das Unglück heftete sich wieder an Nicks Fersen.
Ein Plattenvertrag mit Warner kam durch die Ölkrise nicht zustande. Und als endlich eine Firma gefunden war, hatten Holt und James die Band verlassen, um mit Rick Wakeman zu touren. Im Juli 1974 entschloss Simper sich dann, Warhorse entgültig zu den Akten zu legen.
Geblieben sind zwei LPs, die ich immer wieder gern auflege (auch wenn es nur die Thunderbolt-Versionen mit den hässlichen Covern sind). Und noch ein paar vergebliche Versuche von Simper, eine erfolgreiche Band auf die Beine zu stellen. Doch dazu gibt es vielleicht später mal was hier...

Formed in 1970 around ex-Deep Purple bassist Nick Simper, Warhorse were understandably close to early Deep Purple in their blend of keyboard-colored progressive rock and early heavy metal. The group coalesced when Simper left Deep Purple in 1969 to lead soul singer Marsha Hunt's backing band, which included Rick Wakeman on keyboards for a while. The backing band formed the nucleus of Warhorse, which recorded a couple of albums for Vertigo in the early 1970s. With their early hard rock/metal sounds and a singer (Ashley Holt) who could roll into over-serious, high stentorian vocal phrases, the group have also been compared to early Black Sabbath, although they lacked the hooks necessary to achieve the same level of success as Sabbath or Purple. Echoes of Yes (in the keyboards) and perhaps Uriah Heep can be heard as well. Warhorse broke up in 1973, with drummer Mac Poole joining Gong, and Holt and drummer Barney James (who briefly replaced Poole in Warhorse's final days) going to Rick Wakeman's band.
