In 1985, three teachers of the orthopedically handicapped in Canton City Schools had a vision: free the children from a life spent in front of the television. Get them out of the house to a place where they could enjoy physical and psychological benefits and exciting challenges. Pegasus Farm was incorporated in July of that year. Five riders began lessons on three horses boarded in borrowed stables.
And the rest, as they say, is history.
1986 Pegasus earns accreditation and membership in the North American Riding for the Handicapped Association (NARHA). Fifty riders enrolled.
1987 A generous donor provides funds to acquire 25 acres of farmland. A nine-stall barn is completed and constructed solely with donations of materials and labor by community members. More than seventy riders enrolled.
1988 Handicapped-accessible playground is donated by the Canton Junior League to provide additional recreation for riders and families. Even those dependent on crutches and wheelchairs could enjoy the slide and swings.
The horse supplies the locomotive energy, while the rider has the privilege of deciding on the goal and of guiding the powerful animal's movement. -Sigmund Freud
1990 Pegasus Farm expands into a year-round riding program thanks to generous grants from Mr. Raymond Firestone and the Deuble, GAR, Hoover, Stark County (Community) and Timken Foundations. The 14,000 sq --ft Firestone arena features 18 new stalls, tack room, administrative offices, gift shop, kitchen, indoor riding ring and observation room for families and visitors.
1991 Pegasus earns a service award from the Association for Retarded Citizens (ARC). Rotary International unites 62 chapters to raise capital to seed the Pegasus endowment fund.
1992 Visiting NARHA representative names Pegasus a top-ranked facility.
1993 Generous donations from Rotary, GAR Foundation, Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Firestone and other individuals establish an endowment fund to ensure the facility's long-term financial health.
1997 A successful capital campaign enables the Farm to purchase 86 adjoining acres.
1999 Eight more adjacent acres secured with funds from Hoover, Stark Community, Herbert W. Hoover, Timken and Deuble Foundations, bringing the property to 120 acres.
2001 Pegasus hosts the first open show on the grounds and offers a parade of breeds at the Spring Festival.
2002 An on-site residence is completed for the Farm's manager and a small barn is built for the 4-H Club with funds donated by Nationwide Insurance in honor of Board Member Nancy Breit's granddaughter, rider Valerie Thomas.
2004 The Firestone Arena is re-sided and re-roofed. Ceiling and lights are replaced in the offices and observation room. Pegasus serves 120 riders and other programs for at-risk youth.

The concept of therapeutic riding originated in Europe and has been associated with improvement in the lives of individuals with disabilities for more than 50 years.
Individuals from toddlers to octogenarians with almost any cognitive, physical and/or emotional disability can benefit from therapeutic riding, vaulting, competition or other purposeful, safe and supervised interaction with horses and ponies.
Because horseback riding gently and rhythmically moves the rider's body in a manner similar to a human gait, riders with physical disabilities often show improvement in flexibility, balance and muscle strength. Those whose mobility is limited can explore fields and trails which would otherwise be out of reach.
Those with mental or emotional disabilities find that their unique relationship with the horse can lead to increased confidence, patience and self-esteem. The sense of independence and acceptance found through these activities with the horse benefits them as well.
