Ahhh I remember that day very well, I was walking across the galley and a force took me and slammed me against the wall... of course there was puking here and there but hey, gotta live a little :D
@culinarycop I was on Connie and like I stated before, you and we were on Great Ships. What a pounding. You WestPac was OVER FUN. When I returned to Colorado, after getting out of the Navy, they didn't believe my stories, no worries, my best friend also went there on CVN65 and he said what ever I said was true.
What happens in Phillipines is true and doesn't stay :-)
I know the Hawk, I was on your sister ship CV64. You guys were great, anytime the Hawk said they would show up to relieve us, they did. The Hawk did their job and a good ship.
Those waves even make me cringe, WOW, what a pounding.
I was on the Kitty Hawk from 1980-1984 and worked in the Cat Shop with all the airdales. I saw water coming over the bow when we were on West Pac. This video brings back some fun memories!!! Thanks for posting...
Oh and my berthing was on the 03 level too; right below where the Alert 5 F14s were parked with their engines idling. Try getting to sleep with that on your roof. And when we were inport in hot-ass Singapore the sun turned the coop into a 100 degree oven; AC be damned.
I was on the Carl Vinson in the Bering Sea back in '89 when a wave broke over the bow so hard that it caved in the steel plates that enclose the forcastle. The impact was felt throughout the ship. People thought we hit a whale. There's a berthing compartment right under the front edge of the flight deck; that's got to be the worst one on the boat because of the bow pitching up and down in rough seas. That or the junior officer staterooms right under the waist cats.
@MadTarnsman i was on that ship for a few of those fires... i think it was the one in the 2 main mm that had all of us at GQ ready to start fighting this fire (mind you, i was part of the air wing and even we were suiting up to help fight it.) good times, though. haha
We ran into rough seas like this when we went back to San Diego after an overhaul in Bremerton. Had family and such on board moving everyone back home from a year in dry dock. Early 80's and it was just like this except we had the flight deck and hanger bay full of cars, trucks, RV's, boats you name it. Quite a trip.
meh... the crew chief of the helicopter was probably tired of cleaning her down manually anyway, might as well let mother nature help with the washing duties.
@ps3bigboy320 you are correct, why the fuck would they care, just print more money out of thin air from the federal reserve criminals and get another free one
Ahhh...the Shitty Kitty....the USS Zippo....I was on the Oriskany back in the day, CV-34 and we caught fire almost as much as this thing did.....
..and in weather like this, they get all the aircraft below that they can, "hurricane tie downs" are used, 15 tie down chains and as soon as possible, fresh water flush and wash of all aircraft. There goes your shower for tonight!
@magnum222ish It goes "SPLASH" and sinks to the bottom never to be seen again. Then I suppose some poor brown shirt gets reamed for not properly securing his jet. Then..... Paperwork.
