I was a Damage Controlman working with other shipmates in the focsle to stop flooding when this happened. The impact of this wave was so great shipmates were tossed off the deck, one of which had to be COD off the ship.
I was on this cruise and that Helicopter belonged to my squadron. Major wash and rust patrol on that puppy. I had a blast with it....didn't get sick at all...best rest I ever had with the boat rocking. Real fun trying to walk around which they advised against. What a storm!
I sailed on the Hawk after my tour in Vietnam (PBR Mobile Base 1) in 1971. We too took green water over the bow while in a near cyclone (Pacific Sea version of a Hurricane!) I have very found memories of life on the "Sh!^^in' Kitten. Now resting at the pier next to her sister,Constellation, in Washington at the Bremerton Naval Base, Kitsap!
I was on the Kitty Hawk when this happened and I also decommissioned it... there were and will never be nuke reactors on it, and it did completely flood out the helo... a lot of people got in trouble cause of it... but damn was it sweet to watch...
@USMC517 100% sure. I served aboard the Kitty Hawk from '05 - '07. It's currently in the mothball fleet up in Bremerton, WA. Also, you can't just stuff a reactor in a carrier that wasn't designed for it.
@reedjsupra You sure? my dad served on the kitty hawk before it was as you said "decomissioned". he told me that when they were taking it back to port they cranked that bitch up all the way the engines could go (this is when my dad told me they were going to put the nuclear reactor engines in it) so they wanted to see what the old engines could do.
