When a car doesn't start, the first thing to determine is whether or not the engine is cranking, after which the driver should check to see if a sensor is unplugged. Listen for the fuel pump to turn on when starting a car with help from an automotive technology professor in this free video on problems with starting a car.

@LuisFelix14 Thanks for your helpful tips. Together with this expert professor's summary, I should be able to successfully trouble shoot my car " crank but no-start" problem.

ineed help too! my engine won't turn over and i think its the distributor, new battery, new sparkplugs, wireset and even cap and rotor; apparently it only workks when the engine's cold. can it be the ignition coil or would it be beneficial to just buy a new distributor? btw its a 96 civic.

Well to start a car up you need three main components and that is gasoline - spark - and correct timing. The last thing you want to check is the computer. If the three main problems still wont fix your problem it could a simple sensor needing replacing or maybe even a bad fuse or low battery. If there is low or no compression then it could even be a bad header or blown gasket. If none of these seem to be the problem it might be the computer.

@22solarboy I would check the cam position sensor. that could be an issue. or i would check the fuel relay, maybe the relay went bad.
