On August 25, 2003, NASA launched the Spitzer Space Telescope. Designed to peer into the infrared region of the spectrum, this instrument was designed to pierce the veil of dust and gas blocking visible light and look deeper into galaxies, where young stars are born.

While imaging the Andromeda Galaxy, the Spitzer Space Telescope uncoverd a never-before-seen hole, the result of a collision with a nearby dwarf galaxy, in the Andromeda Galaxy.

@rsin757 i would give it 1 million years at the most, but i know for a fact we will live for a minimum of 20k years longer, it seems our scientific progression will corrupt our species.

@Losuol HAHA! Even if we could travel at 700,000,000 mileds per hour, it would take us 30,000 years to get out of our galaxy. Good luck!

if andromeda is twice the size of the milkyway then the result of the collision will not be a "new milkyway" it will be an expanded andromeda.

@packthepit Gravity will make close galaxies move towards eachother. You are right though that most galaxies move away from the others. Eventually the universe will consist of multiple groups of galaxies with vast amounts of space between them. Hope that answers your question :)

I have a hard time understanding how the Milkyway and Adromeda can collide with each other. I thought it was common knowledge that the galaxies are expanding AWAY from the center of the universe, and AWAY from each other, much like the individual pellets from the blast of a shotgun. They are getting farther away from each other all the time. In order for galaxies to collide they have to be coming head-on, or one overtaking the other. NOT possible in an expanding universe. Anybody?

4:09 That's the shockwave sent out of the merging black holes. Naturally, these occur more than once in a galactic merge such as the one visualized. 4:17 There's the second one. Ofcourse, these shockwaves have plenty of time in between them as this is more of a time lapse of it all.

@rsin757 Humans will survive. We have gotten past the point where something from this world can wipe us out.

@rsin757 I disagree; i think we can continue to survive and explore the universe to it's full
