For The Spine, director and scriptwriter Chris Landreth joins forces again with producers Steve Hoban (Copperheart Animation), Mark Smith (Copperheart Animation) and Marcy Page (National Film Board of Canada), who had collaborated with him to make Ryan (2004) Oscar winner for best animated short. Entirely computer animated, The Spine is a bold film whose dazzling artistic style pushes the limits of animated film.

The Spine uses uniquely bizarre but strangely believable imagery, to tell the story of an ordinary married couple whose lives are in turn tragic, absurd and beautiful.

The Spine was produced by the National Film Board of Canada in association with Copperheart Animation and C.O.R.E. Digital Pictures, with the creative participation of Autodesk Canada CO. and Seneca College School of Communication Arts.

I'm not saying it wasn't cool, but IMHO it didn't add anything of real value to the documented reality that the film exposed. What it does is it turns a documentary into a video-art showing a person's visual interpretation of a given reality, thus reducing that given reality to a puzzle game. I didn't feel Ryan provided a profound revelation regarding film-making (As you would expect from a film that uses VFX to enhance reality). As opposed to films like "Waking life", and "Waltz with Bashir"

Thanks :) I can not comment on Chis's new film as I haven't seen it yet. Having seen Ryan numerous times (I even wrote an essay on it), I must admit that I loved it, because the concept of animated documentary had this gimmick effect. I loved the animation back then, but I honestly thought that the fact that the character's inner conflicts reflects on their physical appearance was old-fashioned in a way...

Don't get you started on"Psycho-realism? What would you like people to get started on? This is a unique, captivating and thought provoking story telling technique that operates on levels that a rare. I would dare to even say brave in this day and age. I just saw this film (at the Melbourne Animation Festival) and it truly cements Chris as one of the world's most fascinating film makers. Whether he is easy to work with or not.

Hehe, you know what? Shooting a documentary (As Chris knows well I presume) goes both ways. You're introducing an alternate, carefully edited reality. In this case even if this is really how the walk through looked like - I would choose to show more dialog and debate, currently the mare fact that I see Chris walking and doing all the talking - gives the impression that it's important for him to be seen doing all the talking. And it's both boring and not too humble.

Chris is actually pretty good as a director, he knows exactly what he wants, but is open to suggestion and lets the animators be creative. He pretty much is a know-it-all brain, awarded a "maya master" award by aliaswavefront/autodesk back in 2001. These walk around were done near the tail end of a series of shots, so really things were pretty much well on their way. Nice Tracking / animation on that screensaver shot by the way.

This is really annoying. It's an orchestrated walkabout, where Chris is portrayed as some kind of know-it-all brain who just goes and tells animators what to do. Almost no dialog, no feedback, just Chris saying "This should be like that. Five minutes and I'm back". I wouldn't want to work with him as an animator for sure. And don't get me started on his whole "Psycho-realism" crusade. You don't throw the subtext visually on the screen, not in 2008 (Maybe back in the 70s).
