For The Spine, director and scriptwriter Chris Landreth joins forces again with producers Steve Hoban (Copperheart Animation), Mark Smith (Copperheart Animation) and Marcy Page (National Film Board of Canada), who had collaborated with him to make Ryan (2004) Oscar winner for best animated short. Entirely computer animated, The Spine is a bold film whose dazzling artistic style pushes the limits of animated film.

The Spine uses uniquely bizarre but strangely believable imagery, to tell the story of an ordinary married couple whose lives are in turn tragic, absurd and beautiful.

The Spine was produced by the National Film Board of Canada in association with Copperheart Animation and C.O.R.E. Digital Pictures, with the creative participation of Autodesk Canada CO. and Seneca College School of Communication Arts.

Recently watched The Spine on Sundance channel, and it is without question my favorite short film I've ever seen. Moved me to tears. I had to watch it two times in a row. Excellent film.

The amazing Alberta Watson is the voice of 350-pound Mary Rutherford in this film. And other great Canadian actor, Gordon Pinsent, gives his voice to Dan. NFB, since our channel is devoted to Alberta, we have linked this 'making of' in our channel ("Interviews...." Playlist). Hope that's OK with you :)

@limbdarkening The film isn't online yet, but it is included in a compilation DVD called Animation Express, available through our online store at NFB.ca.

I guess the "you" you're referring to is not me... don't do a hand-drawn frame-by-frame thing if time's your issue. I animated 2:23, it took me over two months of hard work (although I was also busy doing other things) and it's still in pencil test form... to clean it up would be a whole nother adventure that I will reserve for a future project. Do a flash animation if you want to go faster, as long as you don't mind that it looks like a quickly-done flash animation.

If you're just entering in a sequence of frames you can even just use quicktime... but for composting there is flash, after effects, or Toon Boom if you've got the cash this was made in Maya but don't think that the computer can just do all the work like magic
