The Monday Morning Mechanic shows what can happen when you rock a car back and forth to free your stuck car: broken engine mounts, stripped wiring, and even transmission problems. Luckily, there's still plenty that you can do before you have to call AAA or a tow truck, and the Monday Morning Mechanic shows you how to free your trapped vehicle without damaging it.

My wife gets stuck all the time...My first 4 years in the Marines I was in Motor T they teach you how to drive in deep sand, mud, water and snow without getting stuck.....and the prinipals are basic common sense...she pisses me off to no end every time she gets stuck....it's the same thing every winter. She's lived in Upstate NY for 43 years you would think by now it would of sunk in but NOOOOOO typical woman never learns.

Not sure about the rocking; it's easy to rock in one gear, if you're stuck in snow you don't need reverse to get a rocking motion. If you live near a city take water, food and warm clothes in case you do get stuck. If you live miles from nowhere take dogfood too. Noone eats dogfood until they really really need calories. But best advice??? Going downhill on a slippy road.... brake before the bend and NEVER mid bend. You'd be amazed how few people don't know this.

@Refalm actually bmw and mercedes have bad quality now compared to 20 years ago. You can read stories online of mereced having there engines seize after 25,000 miles.

lol sorry but spinning the wheels fowards and backward in snow and ice aint going to brake engine mounts, there just aint enough traction. dabing the gas pedal to attempt to get traction is more likely to do that in my opinion. what dose every one els think?

or...... you could carry a couple of good old sandbags, for three reasons: 1- for weight in rear= traction, 2- you can use the sand for grip, 3- you can also drive up onto the sandbags instead of driving into the same mess you got yourself into in the first place!!!!!

Another reason to drive a manual- they're more robust and you can rock the car either just on the clutch or by switching between reverse and 1st or 2nd gear

You can rock your car back and forth in European cars, American cars break easily.

Sand doesn't provide nearly as much traction as cat litter. It's way too fine for that. The sand also starts mixing up with the snow, which partly melts it turning it into one big slippery mess. It's better then just snow, but you're way better off with cat litter. You'll also need a lot of sand -- more than cat litter -- making it very heavy, which you need to drive around.

Sand is much heavier, carrying unnecessary weight in your car all year long would be a little foolish.

Ach, dit stelt niks voor met overige sneeuwfilmpjes en auto's. Er zijn echt hele maffe, waarbij iemand 4 tot 5 keer het voor elkaar krijgt om palen en auto's te rammen.
