The Hubble Space Telescope (HST; also known colloquially as "the Hubble" or just "Hubble") is a space telescope that was carried into Earth orbit by the Space Shuttle in April 1990. It is named for American astronomer Edwin Hubble. Although Hubble was not the first space telescope, it is one of the largest and most versatile, and well known as both a vital research tool and a public relations boon for astronomy. The HST is a collaboration between NASA and the European Space Agency, and is part of NASA's Great Observatories series, with the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory, the Chandra X-ray Observatory, and the Spitzer Space Telescope.[3]

Space telescopes were proposed as early as the 1940s. The Hubble was funded in the 1970s, with a proposed launch in 1983, but the project was beset by technical delays, budget problems, and the Challenger disaster. When finally launched in 1990, scientists found that the main mirror had been ground incorrectly, severely compromising the telescope's capabilities. However, after a servicing mission in 1993, the telescope was restored to its intended quality. Hubble's position outside the Earth's atmosphere allows it to take extremely sharp images with almost no background light. Hubble's Ultra Deep Field image, for instance, is the most detailed visible-light image of the universe's most distant objects ever made. Many Hubble observations have led to breakthroughs in astrophysics, such as accurately determining the rate of expansion of the universe.

The Hubble is the only telescope ever designed to be serviced in space by astronauts. To date, there have been four servicing missions. Servicing Mission 1 took place in December 1993 when Hubble's imaging flaw was corrected. Servicing missions 2, 3, and 4 repaired various sub-systems and replaced many of the observing instruments with more modern and capable versions. However, following the 2003 Columbia Space Shuttle disaster, the fifth servicing mission was canceled on safety grounds. After spirited public discussion, NASA reconsidered this decision, and administrator Mike Griffin gave the green light for one final Hubble servicing mission. This is now planned for October 2008.

The planned repairs to the Hubble will allow the telescope to function until at least 2013, when its successor, the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), is due to be launched. The JWST will be far superior to Hubble for many astronomical research programs, but will only observe in infrared, so it would complement (not replace) Hubble's ability to observe in the visible and ultraviolet parts of the spectrum.

@Eagledives maybe earth only supports earth life. like the ocean only supports oceanic life and certain life only lives in freezing climates. Maybe the moon only supports lunar life. Just a fun thought.

Earth is unique in its existence, yet very lonely planet in the infinite universe. God only knows.

If all the stars and dead planets in the universe were created by a single massive event billions of years ago, then it is by pure logic and common sense that before that event happened there must have been something or someone so powerful that pulled the trigger or initiated the event .Why is it that of so many planets , only the earth has life. Yes, we all know the essential elements that supports that life, but that is not what I mean. Why us only? Earth is unique in its existence,

@Jerrythepainter10 so are you saying that god don't exist and all this universe happened by a spark of an accident.. no way we will be here on planet earth breathing by accident.. we are here for a reason.. so there have to be a creator somewhere out there..

The images that Hubble took are real. The pea never did exsist. You don't have to wait til your dead to go there. Just get on the Starship Enterprise and go. God did not create the Earth in 7 days nor was there a big bang therory. Romans 1 vs. 22 has nothing to do with space or the science of space. The ballon idea is a good one but, its wrong too. "I" created all things 26,000 years ago and on Dec. 22, 2012 "I" will return. No I'm not God or Jesus or the Devil. I am the Creator. "AZTEC"

Romans 1 vs. 22-Professing to be wise, they became fools. I guess we will all find out when we die,and this debate will be over. I pray you all make the right choice.

as youve heard before the big bang theory is much similar to a balloon. Picture a balloon that doesnt expand or decrease in size and can withstand a massive amount of pressure.(A steel sphere of air) As more "air" gets put in, all qualities of matter vanquish, and the air pressurizes itself into a small place until the balloon cant take it anymore and it eventually explodes. The balloon releases MORE air when it was popped, then the amount of air contained within the area. As for the pea idk lol

no hes fucking right, you have to be a complete idiot to think this was al an accident. wait.. what? big bang theory? og right, it all caome from a pea sized ball. and then it exploded? ooo ok. got it... NOT. hmm can you tell me where the pea sized ball came from? can you tell me where the pea sized ball was before this was all created? dnt be a hard ass. think about it...

I imagine how small we are in front of the creator.. if his creation is so huge and beatiful in unexplainable way... How can we explain God it self?
