Glory is a unique research satellite designed to orbit the Earth and achieve two major goals. Glory's first goal is to collect data on the properties of aerosols and black carbon in the Earth's atmosphere and climate system; its second goal is to collect data on solar irradiance for Earth's long-term climate record. This seven-minute video introduces Glory's science objectives, people, and instruments, and provides an overview of the Glory mission.

@MsWanderer1 Even if for the sake of the argument I granted it, you're basically saying that (assuming) we knew nothing about the climate then, it by default means we cannot know anything about the climate now. If you really are a scientist you should know that we've made many knowledgeable advancements that weren't even a thought a few decades ago you would know that this line of reasoning is absurd to say the least.

@MsWanderer1 My specific reference was in regards to the actual amount of peer reviewed studies that predicted warming, no change and cooling during the 70's while yours was a generic media assertion representing a scientific minority. You also reference Al Gore as your initial response to the video when no one cares about what Al Gore has to say about science. A scientist that actually knows something on the topic would at least have something more intelligible than that to say I would hope.

@MsWanderer1 Right, Yet you're repeating the same old falsehood that nearly every single uneducated person states when I talk about the topic. It doesn't matter if you're a scientist since being a scientist doesn't mean you can't be wrong about a topic especially if it's a topic you're not adept at. Just like I wouldn't consult a biologist about the physics of launching rockets., I wouldn't consult someone with a degree in metalogy about the climate

@MsWanderer1 Odds are you got this sort of response from penn & teller's bullshit which I actually enjoy as a show, but even they freely admit that in regards to the topic they don't know. However this particular argument is retarded as saying that because the wright brothers didn't know anything about jets that flying is impossible, if you want to see what the science says read what it says not what general media tells you it is. Even invoking Al Gore is retarded because no one cares about him

@garith21 It's nice that you are so much more intelligent than those of us who have actually worked in the science field. Have you always had the ability to learn through osmosis?

@MsWanderer1 Actually during the 70's scientists admit that they didn't know enough about the topic to ask the right questions but if you actually study the peer reviewed studies most predicted warming, and cooling predictions were in the minority. Try and not get your info on science from sources like times magazine and from actual peer review studies or what the National Academy of Science says. Who's naive now =P

@garith21 Right, and in the 70s it was called global cooling. You are charmingly naive! :-D

Great, shoot up those satellites to study the aerosols, and while we're at it, hell why don't we release a bunch of GHG and aerosols on the way, and burn a whole bunch of money at the same time! I really hope something productive comes out of this study.

Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines blew up in 1991 spewing a tremendous amount of sulfur dioxide, SO2, into the upper atmosphere. SO2 combines with H2O to make sulfuric acid crystals which REFLECT sunlight. Because the crystals are high in the atmosphere, above rain clouds, they stay in the upper atmosphere for a long time. The volcanic eruption of Mt Pinatubo actually lowered average global temperatures -0.2C for about 3 years.

There are many causes of global temperature change. Greenhouse gases, Solar Irradiance, Volcanoes, El Nino & ocean circulation, and most important, changes in Earth's orbit & axis perturbations. ONLY GHG has had any major effect in the last 35 years. Global temps. have spiked +0.55C with NO INCREASE in solar irradiance. In fact, TSI is at a 35 year low. BTW, El Nino events have also strengthened 60% in the last 50 years due to global warming. Why? Duhh??

@MsWanderer1 Al gore's a politician, not a scientist, this has been a topic since the 70's, the only thing that Al gore did was make it a main stream topic and no one that cares about the topic cares about Al Gore's opinion in regards to a scientific topic.

@handplanty Sadly some people would rather believe that they aren't responsible for world altering problems while using miserable reasoning rather than examining the evidence and realizing that we are.
