Merle Ronald Haggard (born April 6, 1937) is an American country music singer, guitarist, instrumentalist, and songwriter.

Along with Buck Owens, Haggard and his band "The Strangers" helped create the Bakersfield Sound, which is characterized by the unique twang of Fender Telecaster guitars, vocal harmonies, and a rough edge not heard on the more polished Nashville Sound recordings of the same era. By the 1970s, Haggard was aligned with the growing outlaw country movement, and has continued to release successful albums through the 1990s and into the 2000s. His songs display unflinching personal honesty about such universal themes as love, loss, patriotism, regret and redemption.

In 1997, Merle Haggard was inducted into the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame for his song Okie from Muskogee.

You can hear some Merle and the more contemporary Alan Jackson influences in much of Brad Paisleys work. Kenny is fully Jimmy Buffet and George Straight blended... Is Rascall Flats country at all? However none of the new guys (while I enjoy some of them) are true country like the Hag, Possum, Man in Black, Walyon & Willie, Kris, Hank, Jerry, Bocephus, and even Charlie D Still enjoy some modern "country" though

When I was a kid, we had an album with Lefty Frizzell, Carl Smith and Ray Price. This song and Always Late With Your Kisses were my favorites of Lefty's and the Ray Price song Don't Let the Stars Get In Your Eyes. I grew up on a farm and the radio in the barn was tuned to the local Country channel. Back then, great voices in Country were common. I learned all the words to El Paso and it was played quite often. Where has time gone?

I once lost a bet to an old girlfriend that Hank Williams had brought out this song. She tried to tell me that it was Lefty Frizzell, but I insisted it was Hank. It sounded like something he would do. A quick check in a ASCAP directory told me I was wrong. Love this video with the shots of the gtirls in the bar. Looks like it could have been the old Palimino Bar in Los Angeles.

It's in songs like this that you can see how much he was influenced by the late, great Lefty Frizzell.

Merle was an old Outlaw and one of the greatest. I love the fact that he didn't sell out to Nashville like the rest to gain more fortune and fame. He's a proud Bakersfield boy along with Dwight Yokam and Buck Owens. All 3 claim Bakersfield proudly. Country isn't about Nashville, it's about where you're born and raised. Not where you transplant yourself to. And these 3 knew that and stuck to their roots. Much Respects for that gentlemen.
