Whew! This was the hardest video for me (by far) to make. I started this script on August 21, 2009 and I'm finally finishing this up almost a year later. I would encourage anyone who has any questions to make comments, I'll by happy to try to help because I think this is a very important, albeit very difficult concept to understand.

The format is a little different, I used a green screen for the first time, please let me know what you think.

After this, I think I need to start DeepLobotmy.com

    Thanks for your patience!

The basic building blocks for life could have originated elsewhere and spread across several planets in out solar system e.g. from a comet's tail... thus it may be wrong to draw conclusions if we do find signs of life in our solar system. Also more advanced technology civilizations might not need to send out signals that would. All the aliens might have cable ;o)

@Wolfsrain90 No, no, the specification of the Great Filter should be s.th. like that: 1. Have a beautiful structure 2. Should possess some class of impossibility in physics at least 3. Should bring chaos into the system 4. Should present the things upside-down 5. Should operate beyond the formal logic 6. Should send the economy in the Dimension X 7. Should lead the intelligent life on a wrong road 8. It should have a class of impossibility in time -the switch-over is missed somewhere in the past

The great filter is the reapers.

IMV the main components of the Great Filter (rated by priority) are: 1. Energy constraints & CO2 problem 2. Modern Money Mechanics & the financial problems 3. Economic manipulation and false shortages 4. Unlimited greed and consumption in a world with constrained resources 5. Neglecting major contradictions esp. in physics 6. Sub-optimal operation of the economy 7. Political corruption 8. Misinformation & disinformation 9. Overpopulation and irresponsibility 10. Cross-religion misunderstandings

Your first "filter" is probably not very strong, since bacterial life appeared on Earth about as soon as conditions allowed it to survive. That is not true of complex life, so the second filter appears to be much stronger. Likewise intelligence took a long time to arise, so that may be a strong filter. (You misuse the word "coincidence" in your first sentence, and your reasoning at the end is bad: several worlds reaching the 3.5Gy point within 200Ky of each other would be a REAL coincidence.)

@Mldayuniverse Probably, but this is not interesting. The interesting ones are ahead of us & the closest one is the most interesting for we or our grandchildren will have to go through it. I was looking at the world debt clock -over 44 trillion of hanging debt, divided at 7 BLN (the population) makes USD 6320 per capita, & it is continuously growing. Who, how and when is going to pay up these debts. Isn't it high time to announce the Modern Money Mechanics as triple junk (JJJ) as it actually is.

Is it possible that there could be multiple filters throughout the history of a planet?

The dimension of money as tangible value (of this world) does not come out. On one side of the Future Value of Money we have value, & on the other side value on the power of time => class of impossibility 3 in physics. If money is not value, let's assume it is a formal model of greed. On one side of the equation we have unlimited time series of greed and debt accumulation, and on the other side constrained resources on the earth-infinity has a finite value-class of impossibility 3 in mathematics

RE: 'I don't quite understand the last one' The financial system is engaged with redistribution of the economic wealth & structuring of pyramids of any kind rather than dealing with real world problems. It is based on Money as Debt, but no debt has ever disappeared just so without conflicts. Contradictions in the self cannot be resolved without restructuring/abolishing the whole system. Without releasing the financial system from its problems no real problem in the physical world could be solved

@U1T001 I didn't quite understand that last 1, but the other 2 are very true and quite plausible. Kind of depressing. :(

@1SMF0F Another aspect maybe exhausting the resources of the planet and getting extinct before being able to move to another planet. Or changing to climate to such an extend (as a result of CO2 emissions) that we start loosing the vegetation and 'go south'. Or perhaps having a financial system with two major contradictions - class of impossibility 3 in physics (because of time in the future value) and unlimited formal model of greed operating in a constrained physical world of limited resources.

Videos like these should have a 'wow' button beside the like/dislike butttons. Incredible stuff.

IMO going from "unintelligent" life to "intelligent" life is the great filter. Look how many life forms there are on our planet, but how many of them are sentient? Only us.

MISTAKE!!! Eukaryota aren't necessarily multicellular! Euglena for example, is a unicellular protist. I'm smart and not a complete douchebag no life tool.

even if COMPLEX life evolves there is no guarantee of intelligent technologically advanced life sending us radio waves. We could not even have interstellar communication if you go back in time even several decades. I imagine a universe filled with life but only a VERY small percentage of those worlds sending out radio signals. SETI seriously needs to stop relying so much on receiving a radio message.

Our great filter: Being able to overcome the temptation to use nuclear warfare and ultimately destroy ourselves from it.

We don't play god, we ARE god. When matter finds a way to think and contemplate itself, as in our own "intelligent mind" , we become the cosmos, looking at itself. Of all the millions of species, in all the millions of years, only one has risen to that occasion here. Here, life seems to be easy. Inventing the wheel is the hard part.

Overpopulation, Religious War, Climate Change, we've got quite a few filters...

FTL travel would qualify as a filter would it not? Exhausting a planet before developing the ability to reach another habitable planet.
