In germany they have been doing Artificial disc replacement since 1984.And have mastered it.I was in a car accident and need both cervical and lumbar surgery.I looked at all my options and am choosing Adr.And going to germany for it as i do not want to be anyones ginny pig here.Just waiting for settlement money.just so you know you do have a choice. If you want to be living an active lifestyle again i would look into adr first evaluation is free. Good luck.

Spinal fusions and lamenectomies are really old school surgeries.Artificial disc replacement surgery is really what i would have choosen first as you would have recovered faster .In germany they are replacing up to four discs at once. persons with multi level DDD or disc herniations, bulging discs both lumbar or cervical are able to have adr instead of spinal fusion surgery you would be up and walking no pain the next day.And yes you can have adr and a lamenectomy. If needed fusion can be after.

Hi I know it is not quite the same as your problems but I had a tumour removed from the spinal cord at the bottom of my back, the back of my spine was taken off and replaced with titanium plates, apart from stiffness and soreness i would say there is nothing to worry about , they have excellent pain killers so don't worry about the operation.

@thepick88 oh and you had 2 removed if it was between the L3 and L5...I really cannot see why you would be having all of these problems. I have arthritis of the spine and DDD and this didn't even hurt, it was a minor discomfort. I think your comments are making other people scared and not want to have a potential quality of life saving surgery. Just because you feel crazy amounts of pain doesn't mean everyone else does or that they take drugs. I took NO painkillers after surgery and still dont.

@thepick88 The pain I was in previous to the surgery, Cauda Equina Syndrome pain, was the worst pain I have ever felt in my life. The minor soreness of the surgical scar and area that I had had 2 surgeries on a month apart was nothing compared to that, and really was nothing at all. I only had one done though, Idk if it would hurt more but I think a lot of the pain people feel is mental and increased by a negative attitude

@jesskazen Yes the spine part of the vertebrea is not removed. Mine were broken and shaved. And if your's didn't hurt at all, you must be superman or smoke heroin.

@SuperWeier lol this is the only way to decompress a person's spinal cord, millions of people have had this surgery

  • jesskazen

@thepick88 LOL they don't remove your vertebrae, only the tiny bone that goes over it that makes the bumps on your back....I had this done on my L4 L5 and it didn't hurt at all

@TheRob0816 it doesn't hurt, you dont even know it was done. If you are really having problems walking and numbness and pain because of your spinal cord getting compressed this feels like a miracle when you wake up

TheRob0816 - I have severe degenerative disk disease, bulging disks, canal stenosis and arthritis throughout my back. I had the L3, L4 and L5 vertebreas removed on June 28th, 2011. The first 3 days hurt alot after surgery.

@thepick88 Hi, I hope you are feeling a little better.....I have been thru this along with 2 other back surgeries. The pain afterwards was excruciating to say the least......I don't like to curse or use foul language...but believe me, I did! Anyway, I pray you are feeling less pain and that the spasams have let up,.

SuperWeier - Just to be clear I am not the person in that video. I did have the same surgery. I have Degenerative Disk Disease and had 3 vertbre removed. I couldnt have a fusion due to the lack room in my back. I will have to have more surgeries in the future and depending on the stenosis and arthritis it will depend when that is. The surgery was very painful and I suggest preparing before anyone just walk into a surgery like this. I was not prepared enough for what I woke up to.

I'm still recovering from this type of surgery. The back is healing from the surgery but I still have pain and spasms from the nerves and I have severe nerve damage which causes my toes to be numb and involuntary movements in toes, feet, legs, fingers and hands. I would never go through the pain again unless it was matter of life or death. It hurt before, it hurts during and now hurts after.
