Rare footage from inside the crew cabin of space shuttle Columbia during its final moments. You can hear the crew talking with each other and at one point they get the feeling something is wrong. This is the real unaltered footage I found buried deep inside the NASA archives.

@TheSpiritof1969 All shuttle flights had EVA capability including STS107. This flight however did not have the robotic arm. Getting to the wing and under the orbiter was always practiced with tethers. That however could also do additional damage. Water bags and blankets could have prevented the aluminum spar from melting at 900 degrees long enough so the wing would not structurally fail. Or additional things could have been added like stainless tools etc. Lots of equip. survived

@amgen52 You assume that mission had the capability of an EVA that could reach the damaged area. The damage was on the leading edge of the wing, what makes you think that stuffing the cavity would have increased the chances of survival?

@TheSpiritof1969 They could have done what I mentioned in my prior comment. Nasa doesnt cross their fingers to hope things work out. Linda Ham (mission manager) simply made the wrong choice to persue the matter. Manned and unmanned rocket launches (from any country ) take months and yrs of planning to get them off the ground. In this case, if foam came off the ET, you dont launch another knowing the same thing could happen again putting another crew in danger.

@amgen52 I do wonder though what they could have done had they known. A repair was out the question. I beleive the managers suspected damage but crossed their fingers and trusted to luck. Why in hell did they not get the Russians to send up supplies while another shuttle was readied for a rescue mission?

@1955mouse The orbiter has been hit many, many times by foam. It was alwalys cosmetic and fixed on the ground. They did not find any significant damage on orbit but didnt use all their resources either. If they found the damage, Nasa would definetly tell them. The fix would have been to do an EVA and stuff water bags and thermal blankets (from not so sensitive areas of the orbiter) into the cavity. Bad Houston Mgt. prevented that from happening.

after watching a few of these videos, these astronauts had NO IDEA that the wing was ruptured during take-off. this is what caused the "break-up" or literally the "burn-up" of columbia. they had absolutely no idea what was about to happen, I think ground control did. They caught the strike of the wing, and did not tell the crew how bad it really was. Maybe they didn't know how bad, but knew that it wasn't good. What do you do or say ? ....................

@cirvine11 quite possible. the shuttle was already shedding debris at that point though not bad so the thrusters and the computer would be attempting to compensate for the drag. the shuttle is on full auto pilot until just the final approach to ksc.

Could the turbulence at the end of the video be from the control rockets firing trying to keep the yaw within the parameters?

@wiggyandtee It didnt disintegrate. 80,000 pieces were recovered. This footage was recorded to a tape and the tape was recovered.

What's with the ppl who like that the guys in the shuttle died vs ones that don't? I don't think that if someone dies it is a good thing. Well... Osama is an exception i guess...

First time in HISTORY a space shuttle has ever blown up during re-entry The government must have hidden explosives in it since we can't explain the crash and since this has never happened before or after! It must have been an inside job! LOL I'm kidding.

@yourjudgeandjury shit sorry my last comment was not meant for you but for itachiitachi1946 when he commented good riddance on this video. he came up with some philosophy that people die all the time and that 7 people dying at once wasn´t that important. anyway i´m sorry for the misunderstanding since my last comment was not meant for you at all. infact good job for putting this on youtube, means alot.

@ElvarK1 I never said that and I never will about this accident! You need to check who you are directing your remarks to. I take great offense to your comment that I ever said GOOD RIDANCE to this crew. Not a day goes by I don't think about the accident. In fact I have the photos of both the Columbia crew and the Challenger crew sitting proudly on my desk at work. I think you owe me a public apology in this forum when it was your arguement with itachiitachi1946 about saying GOOD RIDANCE.

@yourjudgeandjury you said GOOD RIDDANCE as in it´s GOOD that they are GONE. Couldn´t you just say "it´s sad yes but people die all the time" not GOOD RIDDENCE.

@ElvarK1 stop relating urself with those guys unless if ur 1 of their relatives u shouldnt feel bad about their death.thats what i tried to explain to u(i told u u wont understand me)society and many factors 'teach'' to masses how to be what to think and feel etc.and if u care about any1 who dies then ud be sad or w/e all the time cause ppl die ALL THE TIME continuesly.

@itachiitachi1946 i care about people that die and if you don´t you don´t say GOOD RIDDANCE that means that you think that it´s good that they DIED. People die all the time. But think about it if one of your close relatives died right now would you say "good riddance"?!

@ElvarK1 u said'its not ok to be happy that 7 ppl died'im NOThappy when some1 dies.BUT death is in natural order(ifu know what i mean)ppl die all the time&many dont care.do u care about some ppl that die in afrika causeof poverty?no do u care about iraqis that r killed by americans&brits?no in that sense i dontcare if some ppl died.thats why i said good ridance.doesnt mean it makes me happy(duh) or i want ppl to die(lol).i told u..i dont expect u to understand.i dont follow social norms thats it
