Some people are under the impression that blogs are good for SEO only if they're updated frequently. How much does frequency play into PageRank for blogs & other dynamic sites? Isn't the content more important than the simple # of posts per day/week?

So it is really that important to update a blog. It is worth having sometime listening to what Google masters has to say about a particular topic.

i personally think nofollow should be used on any links and Google should be able to find out what links to follow and credit and which one? not to.

So why does Google return 50 blog posts repeating the same rubbish PR release about the iPhone4 then? Seems quantity often beats quality.

Combining the best of both, if you can or so desire, is a great way to both keep return visits high AND get the results you need in the engines. In order to score for around 6000 keywords that send one of my sites traffic each month, I had to build up a rather large spectrum of topics over time. Makes the process easier when you're doing posts in between your A List content or you won't be able to take advantage of the long tail as quickly.

nice point that matt is getting across... but i would answer the question by saying, update index pages regularly so that search engines find ur new pages quicker, and maintain old content without too much editing on article pages so that google knows what it's likely to be sending people to see :)

MAtt. You say that content is king. I have unique quality content, and was getting 100 visitors a day from google. I moved the site from a dedicated host to a shared host.... the same site, same content you claim is king, the traffic I was getting from google dropped to 5 ... I am about to abandon the blog (it is about actionscript tutorials)

I write my blog about things I am interested in that seem to have been missed by other people. The problem is its all to unfocussed (maybe the polite word would be "eclectic"). One of these days I will decide what its going to be.

I can think of only three reasons why you'd want to post regularly: 1) you make money through advertising, 2) you are seeking superficial popularity, or 3) you are easily bored and have a lot of free time. In the long run, quality (rather than just regular posting) probably will be most satisfying for both the person posting something and the person viewing it. And satisfaction will in the long run increase your profits and/or your popularity. But if you enjoy posting regularly, then do so.

Surprised Matt didn't point out the obvious misconception about PageRank in the question. PR is purely a number based on inlinks, it has absolutely nothing to do with update frequency, or even what the actual content is.
