Think you know every trick to improving your gas mileage? Here are fuel-saving strategies that aren't common knowledge.

To complete this How-To you will need:

    Overdrive
    Cruise control
    Shaded parking spots
    Radial tires

    Step 1: Don't sweat it

Go on — enjoy your air conditioner on the highway. Consumer Reports says that AC's gas-guzzling reputation is undeserved. And, at higher speeds, opening the windows or sunroof can hurt fuel economy by increasing drag.

    Step 2: Run on empty

Don't fill up your tank until you're practically on empty; the less fuel you're toting, the lighter your car, and the more efficiently it will run.

Step 3: Turn nozzle upside down

After filling up your car, turn the nozzle upside down before you remove it from your tank. You'll get another half a cup of gas that's stuck in the hose.

Step 4: Tighten your gas cap

Tighten your gas cap after filling up so you don't let any precious fuel evaporate.

Tip: Try to park in the shade. This will also help prevent evaporation.

    Step 5: Use your overdrive

Put your car in overdrive for highway driving. It lowers your RPM, or revolutions per minute, which saves gas. Check your owner's manual for the recommended speed at which you may use overdrive.

Tip: If you're due for new tires, get radials; they improve gas mileage by two or three percent.

Step 6: Stay in your lane

Stay in one lane as much as possible; weaving uses up more gas.

    Step 7: Cruise correctly

Use cruise control when you're on a flat highway, where it can increase mileage by 7%. But don't use it on uneven roads, where it's not efficient.

    Step 8: Turn off everything

Turn off all electronics and climate controls before you cut the engine. With the extras off, your engine won't have to strain so hard to restart, leading to better gas mileage.

actually its not really worth it to get that little bit of gas left in the hose, if you take the time to realize. when you start pumping you are getting that last little bit of gas left in the hose from the last person who pumped, providing they didnt tip the nozzle up-side down.

How to save gas(for Americans): Step 1: Don't drive a 3 ton V8 powered tank. Get a normal car, you fat bastard. Step 2: Don't drive to the corner store, you can walk. Step 3: Learn to drive stick. Changing the gears by yourself can save gas(if done properly). Step 4: Don't leave the engine running if you are not actually driving(waiting in the parking lot/on the side of the road. Step 5: Stop the AC when you drive in town. You have windows that open. DRIVING A BIG CAR DOES NOT MAKE YOU BETTER.

Yeah for Bicycles! Practical? With fuel prices what they have been, it's debatable.

Or just simply use XFT at vs.goxft.com and save from 10 to 20% of your fuel and prolong the life of the engine.

@mar504 Maybe it is just me because I can tell if there is lint in my pocket too...

  • mar504

@MrAwsome514 That's 0.2% of the total weight, that's like being able to tell if there is lint in your pocket or not

  • MrAwsome514

@mar504 It is not like it was a rediculusly huge difference but I did notice it.

@MrAwsome514 You could tell the engine was working harder with a 12 pack in the car? lol... sorry, no offense, but that is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard.
    Tuesday 27 December 2011 10:26:37
  • MrAwsome514

@mar504 Look man... I actually live in the mountains and I can tell you a little bit of weight makes a difference when you are talking about steep hills. This is especially true for cars with weaker engines. Fuck... I was driving a honda CRV that belonged to by grandfather for a while and I could feel the difference in how hard the car had to work just from the weight of a single 12 pack of canned drinks... You have to take into account the type of vehicle and the type of terrain.

  • mar504

@MrAwsome514 Physics disagrees. You *might* be able to save up to 50 pounds on the drivetrain by shelling out a LOT of money and replacing parts, the average car is 3,500 to 4,000lbs... we are talking about 1% weight reduction at best, that's NOTHING, even in the mountains. Once again, aerodynamics still trumps weight.
    Tuesday 27 December 2011 00:09:49
  • MrAwsome514

@mar504 It depends on were you drive dumb ass... If you live in the plains maybe that is the case but if you live in a mountain range were you can't go as fast due to all the turns and are constantly going up and down hill the weight makes a much bigger differnece then the aerodynamics.

this is about the most stupidest ways to save on gas i have ever watched

  • mar504

@AndresDiazChencho Maybe you should "read up" on my comment, weight removed from the drive train or chassis will do very little to fuel economy, it will help acceleration maybe, but do little for fuel economy unless you stop and go every 10 seconds. Go study how inertia works and get back to me. Aerodynamics will always trump weight reduction, don't waste money on saving grams.

  • AndresDiazChencho

@mar504 reducing weight from your drivetrain has exponentially better results as compared to reducing weight from the chasis. Read up
