With proper on site SEO, and of course unique content (not just your post but the entire uniqueness of the site) then the only tough problem that you will face is how to market your website or article for that matter by the this is the hardest part of a pro SEOs job.

@aRichBastard Matt has nothing to gain by deceiving you. Fact of the matter is he tries to give good advice without going into specifics. Why? Because ranking algorithms change all the time, so even if other people have techniques to rank higher, they will break as Google gets smarter and you'll lose in the long wrong. To state the obvious, having better content should mean that you are ranked higher, and that's what will eventually happen when Google becomes super smart. SEO will be useless.

@aRichBastard I think you don't see the difference between black hat traffic and white hat traffic, black hat traffic is done with one thing in mind, quick traffic = quick money. But I agree that we obviously don't have the same mindset when it comes to SEO. You don't become a good black hat SEO if you don't understand how Google works, you must learn that first, and you start by becoming a white hat SEO first. I think that's the reason why newbies fail at ranking their sites.

@KoolitPnoi And one more thing: White hat + grey hat is the best possible combination in SEO, but only if you know how to use it. Yes, I could be banned, but that's the reason I experiment with grey and black techniques on "laboratory mice" - to understand how much of shit is too much to Google. Obviously your attitude is different than mine, so it's pointless to dispute. Take care =)

@KoolitPnoi Matt is a good helper, I just say that he shouldn't be the main source of information if you want to be really good at SEO. Actually I thing the black optimization is good for novice (after reading the basics of SEO of course), because the black guys know where is the border between top10 and the sandbox. And they see results sooner which allows them to save time when investigating Google's algorytm. That's not laziness, that's efficiency - to get more benefits using less resources.

@aRichBastard I get your point, you want the easy way, there are grey hats and black hat techniques that you can use, but they are not guaranteed to put your site at the top and keep it there for many months or years. With proper on site SEO, and of course unique content (not just your post but the entire uniqueness of the site) then the only tough problem that you will face is how to market your website or article for that matter by the this is the hardest part of a pro SEOs job.

@aRichBastard woah, don't tell me read and watch Rand Fishkin because I am a SEOmoz subscriber myself. Why would they tell you any grey hat technique, these are pros right here, tHe whitest of the whitehat seos, okay. So what they wanna promote is the good stuff, like what they always say, "you don't buy links, you earn them". See that means you have to work hard to earn the links that will push your site up in the rankings.

@KoolitPnoi You didn't get my point. Yes, Matt is a pro, but what make you believe that he don't hide something? He explains the way HE wants Google to operate. Yes, the content is very important, but Matt will never say anything about some gray techniques which, unfortunately for him and Google, still work. His tips are not bad, but it is very hard to become a pro when listening to him, because you receive filtered information. Better read and watch Rand Fishkin, Danny Sullivan, etc.

Actually what Matt has been saying has been said by many SEO professionals. It's all about the content, the uniqueness of your blog, and how do you promote the content. If you're site is compelling then it wouldn't be very hard to promote your stuff.

@aRichBastard Matt is a Google engineer, so he must be an SEO pro. Pro SEOs still follow Matt Cutt's tips.

I'd rather believe SEO professionals than Matt. The reason is that Matt must not reveal details about what is more important to Google.
