I was being sarcastic about Pat. Clean coal may not be clean, but that does not discount its use a stop gap measure against global warming, perhaps if the hour had an actual expert like David Keith this point would of been brought up

Why have Ed Begley on ask an expert vs a engineer or scientist? What next, is the hour going to have Pat Buchanan as an expert on stem cell research, I am sure he will very objective and give the pro and cons of stem cell research.

@PopCultureInstitute: Nuclear produces around 1/80th the amount of co2 per unit of energy produced via coal. Coal produces more radioactive (Bq/kWh) material than nuclear plants do. Uranium mining is far less intensive than coal mining since the energy density of uranium is much greater than coal. As for cost nuclear is still cheaper than solar by at least 5-1 ratio, though wind is very competitive. As for waste, either fast breeder reactors or deep geological storage can be used.

Although 'green' energy does have some drawbacks (loud for wind mills and you have to flood a place for hydro), I still think that it would be better than using fossil fuels.

i wonder when it is going to be safe/best time to invest into green energy.

Love the hour, but Ed Begley Jr. is not an expert on anything. He's an actor and he's borderline crazy, even his wife hates how hardcore he is about the environment.

Um one problem with nuclear. How long does one take to setup a nuclear power plant, what does one do with the waste? It is faster(and probably not that more expensive) to set up wind and solar farms as well as tidal generation. If there is massive investment in solar and wind infrastructure, the cost per KW goes down.

Coal will still have a role if they develop the "methanol economy". Coal can be turned into methanol and, from there, into a diesel fuel called dimethyl ether.
