A slipping transmission usually refers to an automatic transmission in which the clutch bands that grip various gears don't have the force to grip down tightly enough. Find out why a car with loose enough bands may not move at all with help from an auto mechanic in this free video on car maintenance.

@MusicMan12574 Thanks. But my vehicle is a 1998 GMC Yukon SLT 4-door. The vehicle has been sitting up for a while(since last year) since I had a problem with the starter which I had it replaced(by myself). I drove it and the transmission was slipping a bit. Then one(somewhere this past September) day it started not to move forward or backwards, which it still cannot move backwards today.

@blackandgold51 If I were you I would have a mechanic do it. They'll dispose of the fluid, make sure it's topped off to the right amount. And they're much quicker about it. I don't do my own fluid changes, it's no cheaper after the cost of your time and disposal of the dirty fluid. I advise staying away from the honda dealerships though, they'll rip you off. Go to your regular mechanic if you have one, or if you don't, find a local mechanic that knows hondas or japanese cars in general.

@MusicMan12574 Okay, how do you flush transmission fluid and put in a new one?

I'm confused I thought the bands stop the transmission to allow it to shift. If anyone knows the answer to this for sure please write a comment at me.

Thank you for providing this kind of info for us car ignorant women out here. I have a 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee, we've kept up all the fluid maintenance with Oil Can Henry's, I'm guessing the noise has something to do with the transmission because when we are slowing down to stop it seems like it's when it shifts from 3rd to 2nd gear you hear a clunck, like something dropping too hard into place. It's worse when it's cold and it's been doing this for awhile . Any suggestions Dianne

@DtoWnSux1 Yes, you definitely need to have your fluid flushed. Do you follow the maintenance schedule in your car manual? I have a 2000 Honda Accord 5 speed manual with 91k miles on it, I just had the transmission fluid flushed when I had the 90k service done on the car. Gunk can gather in the gearbox from when the occasional gear grind happens and just from overall use. Flushing the fluid can fix problems like difficulty shifting the gears. After I had mine flushed I noticed the difference.

Sorry, I ran out of space on my last comment, I changed the transmission filter and fluid thinking it would quite possibly fix the problem, but it didn't, I have plenty of fluid in it, so I know that's not the problem, I also have no idea if there has been any other transmission work done on the truck before I had it. However, I would rather try and adjust the bands before I go through all the trouble of removing the transmission and having it rebuilt.. again, thanks..

I have a 92 chevy full-size blazer with a 4L60E transmission, the truck itself has over 230k miles, but I have only had it maybe a year and a half, when I got it, I noticed the transmission slipped alittle, doesn't do it when it is cold, it shifts fine, but the more you drive it, it starts to slip, it is grandually getting worse, takes off fine as long as I don't put my foot into it, is it possible for you to e-mail me some info on how to adjust the bands on this type of transmission.. THANKS..

@kaimi360 I have had a car that has done this . Chances are you will never fix it . The amount of money you would have to shell out for a rebuild on that trans , you could buy a better car . My advice is to ride it till it quits and get something else .
